Job Description
The Centralized Organic Synthesis Group (COSG) is a team of synthetic organic chemists that works at the interface between Medicinal and Process Chemistry. The group works directly with small molecule Discovery project teams from pre-Lead Optimization through the clinical candidate nomination process. The team is charged with providing chemistry strategies, novel cores and intermediates for structure-activity relationships, optimized routes for active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and is expected to be a source for synthetic expertise. As project teams proceed toward a clinical candidate, COSG chemists execute large-scale synthesis campaigns to support preclinical toxicology studies and transfer high-quality synthetic routes to the Process Chemistry team. COSG chemists are exposed to several projects at once and are expected to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders and technical experts to achieve project and Discovery goals. The applicant must have a passion for hands-on synthetic organic chemistry.
Primary Job Function:- Conceive and execute synthetic organic chemistry research and development that achieves project and area goals.
- Provide high-quality intermediates and API for the Medicinal Chemistry teams and toxicology studies.
- Generate new scientific proposals and lead those efforts to advance our understanding of project chemistry. Investigate, identify, develop, and optimize new methods/ techniques.
- Act as a lead scientist in an area of expertise on one or more projects.
- Critically evaluate relevant scientific advances and integrate this knowledge into research programs.

- Proactively seek out new information in the literature and incorporate this into individual project(s) as well as the overall program.

- Effectively communicate research and/or other regulatory materials.
- Present research at group and project meetings.
Position Accountability/Scope:- Demonstrate a high degree of responsibility in maintaining scientific standards, and safe laboratory practices.
- Participate in establishing project goals, defining short and long-term chemistry strategies, and contribute to the generation of project-related documents and presentations.
- Keep accurate and current records of research and/or project related activities according to AbbVie policies.
Internal/External Contacts and Interactions:- Use external information to gain competitive intelligence. Act as advocate to integrate this knowledge into the group's research efforts.
- Generate new research or development strategies to effectively address project and divisional goals and needs.
- Collaborate with functional and technical experts to facilitate scientific achievement.
- Publish project-related research in high-impact factor peer-reviewed journals, R&D reports, patent applications and/or regulatory documents/filings.
- Act in compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:- MS or PhD in Organic Chemistry or related field. Postdoctoral or pharmaceutical industry experience is desirable.
- 8+(MS) or 0+(PhD) years of experience
- Excellent practical synthetic organic chemistry and analytical skills.
- Experience in multi-gram synthesis, multi-step synthesis campaigns, and reaction optimization.
- Ability to resolve key project hurdles and assumptions by effectively utilizing available information and technical expertise.
- Strong scientific communication and writing skills.
- Strong desire to collaborate and work in a highly dynamic team setting.
