We're currently recruiting for a Senior Recreation Specialist - Aquatics Certified Pool Operator. The primary responsibilities for the job are to ensure a high standard of water quality and maintenance for all pools, spas, water features, and related equipment. It involves overseeing chemical levels to meet Washington State and Clark County Health Department regulations. The Senior Recreation Specialist plays a key role in optimizing pool operations, scheduling, and associated programs, and may provide instruction and supervision in other program areas as necessary. Responsibilities include recruiting, training, and supervising temporary staff and volunteers. This position requires flexibility to support various recreational areas and services and acts as a liaison between programs and departments relating to the City's pool and water feature operations
This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt union position. This position is covered under the provisions of an agreement between the City and the AFSCME union. The schedule for this position is Tuesday - Saturday, 7am to 4pm. Job Details
Essential Functions:
• Oversees and supervises the day-to-day operations of swimming pools water chemistry, spa, and water features. Monitor the operations of an aquatic facility and be able to interpret mechanical problems. Resolve any issues that may arise with filters, pumps, and motors. Maintain water chemistry and clarity to Washington State standards.
• Perform preventive maintenance on pumps, suction lines, hoses, drains, piping, UV or ozone equipment, balance tank, valves, hair and lint pot and skimmer traps, ladders, diving boards, slides, handrails, automated chemical feeder equipment, flow, and control valves.
• Plan, research, organize, develop, implement, and evaluate Aquatics activities/programs, events, and drop-ins. This entails staffing, purchasing supplies, and accessing community partners while considering customer needs.
• Provide internal and external customer service in-person, by phone and/or by email for inquiries, requests, comment cards and other related concerns related to programs. Research customer needs for classes and programs. Respond to and resolve sometimes difficult and sensitive citizen inquires and complaints. Professionally address difficult customers and/or behavioral concerns. Take appropriate action for misconduct of customers within program area including removal or suspension.
• Contribute to effective marketing of programs and facilities. Maintain information that is accurate, clear, and engaging via the website, social media, registration site, printed materials, city/building newsletters, quarterly catalog, etc
• Ensure that all facilities and equipment are regularly monitored for safety and running properly. Participate in the development of effective pool schedules; plan, implement and evaluate assigned programs. Assistant in determining preventative maintenance schedules and small capital improvement and/or replacement projects for associated water quality equipment and systems.
• Supervise between 40-60+ temporary employees including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, scheduling, training, motivating, timesheet approval, evaluation of performance, counseling, staff recognition and facilitating meetings when needed.
• Train and troubleshoot software systems in the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department; When2Work; and Workday.
• Maintain inventory, chemical and equipment orders, organize, identification and store as required by fire code and chemical storage laws.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications
Experience and Education
Experience:
• Three (3) years of experience in recreational swimming pools programming, physical education, or related field with demonstrated emphasis in pool operations including water chemistry. Current possession of valid Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO) certification. Expired certifications within the last two (2) years may be considered. Education:
• Equivalent to an Associates Degree and/or Completed 2-year Certification Program. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Possession of:
• Valid Driver's license Ability to obtain or Possession of:
• Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO) certification or equivalent. If expired within the last two (2 ) years the candidate must have the ability to recertify within two (2) months after hire date.
• ILTP (E&A) Lifeguard certification held for a minimum of 1 year;
• Equivalent Lifeguard Certifications (Red Cross, Star Guard, and American Lifeguard Association) will be considered based on ability to obtain ILTP within one (1) month of hire date.
• Within three (3) months of hire: Confined Space Training & Fall Protection
• Within one (1) year of hire: ILTP (E&A) Lifeguard Instructor certification
• Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification (current or in past) preferred, but not required Knowledge
• Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO), Confined Space Training, Use of Respirators & Complete Fit Testing, Ellis Lifeguard and Instructor, CPR & First Aid,

• Develop, implement, and evaluate water quality standards required by the Washington State Department of Health and Clark County Health Department.
• Instruct Lifeguard Classes after achievement of ILTP certification and facilitate a Lifeguard Auditing program.
• Be an active member of your team, staff, department, and the organization by displaying cooperative, supportive, and consistently good work product, work habits, and work ethics.
• Maintain CPO or AFO certification; Confined Space and Fall Protection Training; Ability to use Respirators and pass associated Fit Testing.
• Maintain Confined Space, Fall Protection, Ellis Lifeguard and Instructor, CPR and First Aid, Certifications.
• Attend related workshops, in water chemistry and related field hosted by Health Department
• Implement and uphold City, department, program and building safety policies and procedures.
• Ability to recruit, interview, hire, train, schedule and lead temporary employees and volunteers.
• Manage discipline actions for customer behaviors and Code of Conduct issues.
• Provide professional customer service and problem-solving customer situations.
• Coordinate employee training and program evaluation techniques.
