We are looking for a Senior R&D Mechanical Engineer to join our team today.
The Senior R&D Mechanical Engineer is a highly experienced mechanical engineer who works within a research and development (R&D) department, leading the design, development, and testing of new mechanical components, systems, or products, utilizing advanced engineering principles and often collaborating with cross-functional teams to bring innovative ideas to fruition; they typically have extensive knowledge in CAD software, prototyping, and FEA validation to accelerated lifecycle testing methodologies, and plays a key role in guiding the direction of new product development.
Key responsibilities of a Senior R&D Mechanical Engineer include:
- Conceptualizing and designing new mechanical systems:
Generating innovative ideas, performing feasibility analysis, and creating detailed design concepts for new products or product improvements.
- Solid modeling and drafting:
Utilizing CAD software like SolidWorks to create 3D models and detailed engineering drawings of mechanical components and assemblies, draft, edit, and review 2D technical drawings.
Overseeing the fabrication of prototypes for testing and validation, including managing relationships with external vendors.
Designing and executing comprehensive test plans to evaluate the performance of prototypes, analyzing data, and identifying areas for improvement, supervising quality assurance testing and reporting.
Mentoring junior engineers, providing technical guidance, and leading design reviews within the R&D team
- Collaboration with cross-functional teams:
Working closely with operations, outside manufacturing, sales and marketing to ensure market potential and other stakeholders to ensure successful product development.
- Staying updated with technology:
Keeping abreast of new materials, manufacturing techniques, and industry trends to incorporate advancements into product designs.
Required skills and qualifications:
- Master's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field preferred
- Extensive experience in injection molded plastic part design and manufacturing methods
- CAD and FEA fluency (SolidWorks preferred)
- Ability to produce near-flawless 2D technical drawings of both parts and assemblies
Experience working with international contract manufacturers
- 5 or more years of experience in high-volume, consumer product design with a strong grasp of cradle-to-grave product design lifecycle
- Experience with prototyping techniques and manufacturing processes
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to lead and mentor junior engineers
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in mechanical engineering or related field
Background in material science and/or exposure to textiles, sewing, foams, and other soft materials/their manufacturing methods
Experience performing DFMEA and root cause analyses
Experience in Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), statistical tolerance analysis techniques, functional dimensioning, and geometric tolerancing
Physical Requirements:
