Job Title - Senior Process Safety Engineer

Location - West London (Hybrid working)

Type - Permanent Salary - £50k - £70k (experience dependant) + tax-efficient share scheme

The Opportunity:

Our client seeks an experienced process engineering professional with technical safety expertise to join their Product team as a Senior Process Safety Engineer. The role involves shaping system design to meet safety, performance, efficiency, and cost KPIs.

You will join an innovative, fast-paced company aiming to disrupt the energy industry and enable a net-zero future.

What you'll do:

  1. Manage the process safety lifecycle of demonstrator test rigs and customer pilots from concept to operations.
  2. Develop and own safety deliverables such as safety basis and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  3. Support lab-scale testing and scale-up with the technology team, focusing on hazard and risk minimization.
  4. Prepare for HAZOP & HAZID sessions with external partners, leading hazard identification and risk management workshops.
  5. Create and maintain engineering deliverables throughout the design lifecycle, including PFDs, equipment sizing, HMBs, P&IDs, commissioning plans, and SOPs.
  6. Perform process engineering calculations supporting system design, such as PSV sizing, safety time calculations, ventilation rates, and SIL validation.
  7. Collaborate with partners, subcontractors, and vendors to achieve pilot scale by 2026.
  8. Manage system development work packages within your scope.
  9. Promote safety best practices within the team, including implementing Inherently Safer Design (ISD) principles.
  10. Guide zoning hazardous areas for explosive atmospheres (ATEX / DSEAR) and hazardous substances control (COSHH).

About you:

You should be passionate about clean energy and eager to bring innovative ideas in a collaborative, inclusive environment. You will:

  1. Be proactive in problem-solving and solution implementation.
  2. Hold a master's degree or higher in Chemical or Process Engineering.
  3. Have relevant experience in Hydrogen, Chemical, Nuclear, or similar regulated industries.
  4. Possess professional experience in a technical safety role and across project development lifecycle.
  5. Have worked with high-pressure/high-temperature systems and flammable gases.
  6. Be skilled in process engineering design from first principles.
  7. Experience with PHA techniques and Process Safety Management.
  8. Knowledge of safety standards such as ATEX.
  9. Experience with safety monitoring equipment, instrumentation, and process control.
  10. Possess strong communication and organizational skills, with attention to detail and team collaboration.
  11. Committed to inherent safe design and risk minimization.
  12. Have knowledge of water electrolysis, hydrogen applications, and standards.
  13. Chartered Engineer status with a recognized Professional Engineering Institution.
  14. Experience with Layers Of Protection Analysis (LOPA).
  15. Familiarity with modeling tools like PHAST, FLACS, and process simulation tools such as Aspen Plus, Hysys, or Unisim.
