Are you excited by the potential of large-scale carbon removal? If so, Captura Corp. is seeking a Senior Process Engineer.
Captura is an early-stage technology start-up with the mission to develop globally scalable carbon removal to support a sustainable future for the world's climate. Captura's unique technology was developed and proven in Caltech's laboratories and uses established electrochemical concepts to enable gigaton-scalable solutions for removing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere via direct ocean capture. We capture carbon dioxide using only renewable electricity and seawater, creating no byproducts. CO2-depleted seawater is returned to the ocean to absorb CO2 that comes from the atmosphere.
Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Process Engineer to join our growing startup at a pivotal early stage in our polymer production operations. This is a unique opportunity to help shape and build our production capabilities from the ground up. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on technical expertise, a proven track record of driving process improvements in a production environment, and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional, diverse teams. They will take full ownership of critical projects in a fast-paced setting, playing a key role in ensuring smooth, efficient production operations while driving continuous improvements in both process performance and safety.
Key Responsibilities
Process Engineering & Technical Operations
- Select and specify appropriate pumps for chemical systems including monomers, polymers, and slurries.
- Design and size key equipment such as condensers, heaters, and chillers.
- Develop and maintain detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for processes such as polymerization, precipitation, and drying.
- Perform chemical usage and cost calculations per batch for accurate budgeting and forecasting.
- Conduct complete mass balance calculations for all production processes.
- Oversee chemical ordering and inventory management to maintain supply continuity while minimizing overstock.
- Develop and manage a list of critical spare parts and oversee their procurement and inventory.
Maintenance & Equipment
- Plan and execute proactive maintenance programs to maximize production up time.
- Install, troubleshooting, and repair chemical processing equipment as needed.
- Coordinate with external vendors and contractors for equipment upgrades and major maintenance.
Hazardous Materials & Safety Management
- Ensure the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with internal and regulatory standards.
- Lead HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) studies and implement safety improvements.
- Collaborate with EHS teams to promote a culture of safety across the plant.
- Conduct risk assessments, lead safety audits, and facilitate regular staff training on chemical safety and emergency response.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in chemical or polymer manufacturing.
- Strong background in process design, chemical handling, and production operations.
- Experience with selecting, installing, and maintaining production equipment.
- Proficient in core process calculations (mass balances, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics).
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to mentor and guide junior team members.
- Demonstrated experience working with hazardous chemicals and implementing safety protocols.
- Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with R&D and closely support the Head of Polymer Production from a chemical process perspective.
