Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Network Engineer to lead the design, expansion, and implementation of secure network infrastructure at a South San Francisco office location. This is a hands-on, project-based role involving upgrades to current Palo Alto Networks (PAN) firewall and Meraki switching environment, as well as improving wireless coverage across multiple floors of the building-including the basement level.
Senior Network Engineer (Contract)
• Location: South San Francisco, CA (Onsite 2-3 days/week)
• Duration: 3 months
• Hours: 20 hours/week initially, potential to scale to 40 hours/week
• $85-90 per hour
Responsibilities:
• Network Design & Deployment:
Evaluate and redesign the existing LAN/WLAN architecture to support new office expansion.
Extend wired and wireless network coverage, with a focus on performance, scalability, and security.
Implement wireless solutions to provide seamless coverage throughout multiple floors and basement levels.
• Firewall & Security Configuration:
Review, configure, and optimize Palo Alto Networks firewalls, including security policies, NAT rules, threat prevention, and VPN.
Ensure compliance with security best practices, zoning, and segmentation strategies.
• Switching Infrastructure:
Install, configure, and troubleshoot Cisco Meraki switches, including VLAN setup, port configurations, QoS, and uplink optimization.
• Onsite Support & Coordination:
Collaborate with IT and facilities teams for cabling, rack installs, and network extension efforts.
Provide detailed documentation of the new network topology and configuration changes.
Be physically present onsite 2-3 days per week to assess coverage, validate installs, and perform hands-on tasks.
Required Skills & Experience:
• 7+ years of experience in enterprise network engineering roles.
• Strong hands-on expertise with Palo Alto Networks firewalls, including advanced security modules and Panorama management (preferred).
• Proficiency in deploying and managing Cisco Meraki switches and wireless access points.
• Experience with structured cabling planning, switch stacking, and high-availability design.
• Ability to conduct wireless site surveys and validate coverage (Ekahau or similar tools a plus).
• Knowledge of VLANs, routing protocols (OSPF/BGP), subnetting, and general Layer 2/3 troubleshooting.
• Understanding of zero trust principles and secure network segmentation strategies.
• Excellent documentation and communication skills.
Nice to Have:
• PAN Certified (e.g., PCNSE)
• Meraki CMNA or CCNA/CCNP certifications
• Experience with network monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, PRTG, Meraki Dashboard analytics)
• Prior experience in office buildouts or expansions is a strong plus
