Position Overview:
The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) at the University of Rochester is seeking a Senior Lab Engineer to oversee the Target Filling Systems area within the Cryogenic & Tritium Facility (C&TF). This is an exciting opportunity to join a world-class research institution focusing on laser-driven fusion and high-energy density physics. As a Senior Lab Engineer, you will manage operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and system upgrades for unique, one-of-a-kind systems critical to fusion research.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engineering Oversight: Lead and manage the engineering operations of cryogenic and radiological target filling systems used to prepare fuel pellets for fusion and high-energy density physics experiments.
- Maintenance & Upgrades: Oversee the maintenance and upgrade of filling systems and ensure operational readiness.
- Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve mechanical, electrical, vacuum, and radiological issues as they arise.
- Collaboration: Work closely with LLE's mechanical, electrical, and controls engineers to design and implement equipment upgrades and new systems.
- Radiation Safety: Oversee the safe handling of radioactive materials and maintain NYS Radiation Worker certification.
- Team Management: Supervise a team of four operators, managing daily operations and ensuring adherence to facility procedures.
- Target Production Goals: Collaborate with C&TF facility peers to meet overall target production objectives.
- Operations: Support operations, including occasional second shift work (2-3 days per month).
- Procedure Updates: Update existing procedures and create new ones to align with the goals of the facility.
- Documentation: Use databases and logs to accurately record activities, prepare weekly reports, and maintain other technical documentation.
- Customer Liaison: Represent the C&TF in meetings with internal and external customers, including U.S. national laboratories.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field, with a minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Experience: Prior experience in managing complex systems, including cryogenic, mechanical, and radiological systems is highly desirable.
Required Skills:
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Solid understanding of engineering and physics fundamentals, including mechanics, electrical systems, vacuum technology, and chemistry.
- Excellent mechanical aptitude with the ability to work with hand tools and troubleshoot complex systems.
- Proficient in reading mechanical and electrical drawings.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with experience working in a collaborative team environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and a willingness to learn additional software as required.
- Strong technical writing skills for preparing reports and documentation.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and climb ladders or stairs.
Desired Skills:
- Experience managing teams.
- Familiarity with cryogenic systems and high-pressure systems.
- Prior experience with radiological materials.
