Department Overview:
The Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Division within the High Voltage Distribution (HVD) Engineering department provides comprehensive, multi-disciplinary engineering design and technical leadership for high-voltage electric distribution projects. These projects support the construction, upgrade, repair, and modification of company-owned and operated substations throughout Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
Our team is responsible for both internally developed and consultant-led engineering designs. Core responsibilities include the development of I&C schematics and wiring diagrams, project scoping, AC and DC load studies, procurement and construction support, and end-to-end project execution.
Position Summary:
This role will primarily support projects involving external engineering consultants. The selected candidate will play a key role in managing the scope, quality, and schedule of consultant-delivered designs, while also supporting internal engineering standards and processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain Scope of Work (SOW) documents for consulting projects
- Prepare Requests for Quotation (RFQs) and Purchase Requisitions (PRs) for contracted engineering services
- Establish and monitor key project milestones (e.g., 30/60/90 percent design reviews)
- Review and process consultant invoices in alignment with project deliverables
- Provide technical review and support for I&C design submittals
- Address Requests for Information (RFIs) from consultants during project execution
- Lead and participate in regular meetings with consulting firms to ensure design quality, schedule adherence, and project coordination
- Track and improve key performance indicators (KPIs), including design quality and timeliness
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related technical discipline
- Relevant experience in electrical utility or high-voltage substation design preferred
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
- Capable of working independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within cross-functional teams
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with engineering document review and substation design processes
- Familiarity with managing consultant-led design projects and external service providers
- Knowledge of AC/DC load studies, wiring schematics, and I&C design principles
