Job Summary
The Senior Estimator, reporting to the Chief Estimator, will be responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates for construction projects, ensuring accuracy and completeness. This role involves compiling and submitting bids on time, collaborating with project teams to align estimates with project goals, and supporting the Chief Estimator in developing and implementing estimating strategies. The Senior Estimator will also monitor market trends and costs, ensure compliance with industry standards, and mentor junior estimators to foster a collaborative and supportive team environment.
Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for construction projects by analyzing project plans, specifications, and requirements to develop comprehensive cost estimates. Calculate costs for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Obtain material and subcontract quotes from vendors and subcontractors. Building good relationships with vendors and subs.
- Perform risk assessments to identify any challenges or risks associated with project costs, propose solutions, and contingencies.
- Compile and submit bids on time by preparing and organizing all necessary bid documents, ensuring they are complete and meet client requirements. Submit bids within the specified deadlines, maintaining a competitive edge.
- Collaborate with project teams by working closely with project managers and engineers to align estimates with project goals and timelines. Obtain and evaluate bids from subcontractors and suppliers to ensure cost-effectiveness and accuracy.
- Ensure a smooth and efficient handover of project details from the estimation phase to the project manager. This includes preparing comprehensive documentation that covers all aspects of the project, such as scope, budget, timelines, and any identified risks. The Senior Estimator will work closely with the project manager to clarify any details and address any questions, ensuring that the project manager has all the necessary information to proceed confidently with project execution.
- Support the Chief Estimator by contributing to the development and implementation of estimating strategies and methodologies. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance estimating practices and processes.
- Monitor market trends and costs by staying updated on industry trends, material costs, labor rates, and equipment rates to ensure estimates reflect current market conditions. Adjust estimates based on the latest market data and forecasts to maintain accuracy.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards by maintaining accurate records and documentation for audit purposes. Ensure all estimates comply with industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Mentor and support junior estimators by providing guidance, training, and support to junior team members. Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment, promoting professional development and skills enhancement
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum of 10 years of heavy civil construction experience.
- Minimum of 7 years of heavy civil estimating experience.
- Experience estimating heavy civil projects for municipalities and DOT, concrete paving, sitework, mass excavation, water, sewer, and storm utilities.
- Excellent analytical, strategic planning, and communication skills.
- Experience with HCSS HeavyBid, Agtek Earthwork 4D, and Bluebeam Revu.
- Possess strong time management skills.
