Position Overview:
A Top ENR-Ranked Firm is looking to bring on a Senior Estimator responsible for leading and coordinating all preconstruction activities, including estimating, scheduling, subcontractor coordination, and client interaction. This role ensures the accuracy and completeness of project estimates and supports the successful transition from preconstruction to operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and manage the work of preconstruction team members and support staff.
- Develop and analyze detailed cost models during the design development and bidding phases.
- Ensure preliminary construction schedules are prepared for each estimate.
- Generate progress estimates at key design milestones; assess material and system costs and review design documents for coordination.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and vendors.
- Verify that all estimates-including general conditions-accurately reflect project requirements.
- Lead preconstruction strategy meetings to define the approach for each project or estimate.
- Identify and communicate potential risk factors to senior management.
- Create and maintain variance reports to clearly track changes in the estimate.
- Develop detailed, realistic schedules covering design, approvals, estimating, and procurement activities.
- Define clear scopes of work for bidders and manage the prequalification process.
- Review design documents for constructability and value engineering opportunities.
- Ensure all estimates comprehensively account for the full scope of construction.
- Contribute to business development efforts by supporting proposal preparation and client presentations.
- Provide monthly cost reports for active preconstruction assignments and oversee departmental budgets.
- Lead transition meetings between preconstruction and project operations teams.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships and ensure satisfaction prior to contract execution.
- Offer expert guidance, planning, and recommendations to both current and prospective clients.
- Assist in developing project studies, construction methods, and cost estimates as needed.
- Review and approve all estimates and schedules for assigned projects, whether negotiated or competitively bid.
- Apply knowledge of cost control systems and ensure consistent usage across projects.
- Perform additional responsibilities as needed or assigned.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or equivalent industry experience.
- 6-10 years of large commercial estimating experience, including team leadership.
- Proven leadership and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive, urgent approach to challenges.
- Proficiency in drafting and construction-related software tools.
- Solid understanding of contract law and construction accounting practices.
- In-depth knowledge of project management systems including scheduling, estimating, cost control, procurement, and business development.
