The Position

Serve as a core member of the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) team. Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in providing direct support to one or more operations areas, provide guidance and coaching to other EHS team members and site operations leadership, and provide expertise on numerous EHS aspects in accordance with education and experience. Ability to serve as site CVP Partner with establishment and oversight of all health and safety programs and backup to site EHS Lead.

Reports to Senior Manager.


Essential Functions

  • Own proper execution of OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) regulations (Process Technology, PHA, Management of Change, Incident Investigation, etc.) and EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP) across the site and/or area of responsibility
  • Provide expert guidance on chemical hazards, including material compatibility, chemical interactions, & suitable safeguards from said hazards, such as appropriate PPE or engineering controls
  • Consult on engineering designs as they pertain to safety & provide relevant input into the required safety features (materials of construction, relief devices, emergency stops, inherently safer design, etc.)
  • Lead & coach others on execution of risk assessment methodologies (Workplace Risk Assessments, What-if, HAZOP, FMEA), as well as layer of protection analysis (LOPA)
  • Develop, share knowledge and experience, and manage various programs for life safety functions & systems (Work Permitting, LOTO, Fall Protection, Confined Space Entry, Safety Interlocks Systems, PPE, etc.) and Incident Investigation program
  • Lead obtaining & maintaining ISO 45001 certification consistent with the overall organization for the site
  • Prepare in-depth analysis for leadership in relation to goals & KPIs, to include trending of EHS & PSM site/department goals to drive optimal performance and continuous improvement
  • Manage and/or lead complex cross-functional projects/ initiatives, both short & long-term, with stakeholders
  • Support EHS functions such as Emergency Response, Fire/Life Safety, and First Aid teams
  • Own injury case management within area of support in collaboration with Occupational Health
  • Attend Novo Nordisk network meetings on a routine basis and provide SME input for Site Clayton while actively collaborating and sharing best practices with other CVP and SVP partners
  • Own and ensure that psycho-social aspects of health & safety are being recognized & addressed while working closely with the People & Organization (P&O) team
  • Provide guidance on the Industrial Hygiene (IH) program to ensure compliance of applicable exposure limits within local regulatory requirements and Novo Nordisk standards
  • Partner with Occupational Health on surveillance monitoring requirements and any other IH contractor relationships
  • Follow all safety & environmental requirements in the performance of duties
  • Other duties, as assigned

  • Physical Requirements

    Moves equipment &/or supplies weighing up to 33 pounds within the facility using various body positions. Routinely operates & inspects manufacturing equipment using hands. Strap & unstrap pallets using hands. Must be able to be on your feet for up to a 12-hour shift. May require corrected vision to 20/20 or 20/25 based on role. May require color vision based on role. Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder. May be required to work at elevated heights. Occasionally works around odorous &/or hazardous materials. May be required to wear latex gloves. May perform critical job functions in extremely cold work environments depending on site. May position oneself within confined spaces for inspection if required of the role. Ability to work in loud noise environments with hearing protection. May be required to secure a motorized vehicle license & operate a motorized vehicle based on the role.


    Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Occupational Safety, or relevant field of study from an accredited university required
  • May consider Master's Degree or accredited professional certification (CSP, GSP, PE or CIH) with (5) years of direct safety experience required, preferably in a chemical manufacturing or pharmaceutical environment
  • May consider an Associate's Degree in Engineering, Occupational Safety, or relevant technical field of study from an accredited university with nine (9) years of direct safety experience required, preferably in a chemical manufacturing or pharmaceutical environment
  • May consider High School Diploma or equivalent with eleven (11) years of direct safety experience required, preferably in a chemical manufacturing or pharmaceutical environment
  • Minimum seven (7) years of experience within complex manufacturing, preferably chemical or pharmaceutical environment required
  • Knowledge of requirements/expectations from authorities e.g. OSHA required
  • Ability to provide support for a 24/7 operational business required
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills, presentation skills, computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Office, Risk Assessment tools) required
  • Demonstrate ability to develop, manage & achieve action plans through communication & collaboration skills required
  • Experience building strong working relationships, ability to lead task & project teams as well as ability to manage a changing work environment with constant changing requirements required
  • Demonstrate appreciative feedback style and appreciate other team members & their contributions preferred
  • Demonstrate a disciplined approach to problem solving that is based on data & facts & is consistent with vision/business goals & values required
  • Demonstrate ability to own the results of individual actions & team's activities while modeling the company values required
  • Demonstrate ability to lead &/or support incident investigations within area or across multiple departments preferred
  • Extensive working knowledge & practical experience with life safety systems (i.e. LOTO, Hot Work, Confined Space, Line Break, etc.) and chemical safety required
  • Demonstrate understanding of chemical hazards & the OSHA PSM standard required
  • Working knowledge of fire detection/suppression/prevention systems &/or gas detection systems required
