Communication System Engineer Hybrid from Reston, VA
Position Summary As a Communication Systems Engineer, you will be a key member of the Systems Engineering team, responsible for designing and developing advanced communication systems utilizing MEO, GEO, and LEO satellite systems for the U.S. Government community.You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to transform isolated solution components-such as RF hardware, modems, software, and IP networking-into fully integrated and reliable communication systems. Your primary responsibilities will include documenting system requirements, Interface Control Documents (ICDs), Concepts of Operations (CONOPS), and system design and architecture documents. Following the design phase, you will define service thresholds, write test plans, and ensure the solutions meet performance and reliability standards. Additionally, you will lead the development and assist with productization of these solutions, oversee their lifecycle management, and address technical escalations as needed.
What you will need to be successful in this role:
- RF Fundamentals - Link budgets, spectral efficiencies, EPFD, baseband technologies
- IP Networking Proficiency - CCNA-level knowledge required
- System Definition Expertise - Ability to define Concepts of Operations (CONOPS) and system requirements for complex communication systems
- Effective Communication Skills - Strong written and verbal communication abilities, with the capacity to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
- Curiosity and Adaptability - A naturally inquisitive mindset with a strong interest in exploring and understanding emerging technologies
Primary Responsibilities: - Design, commission, and test advanced space-based communication systems throughout their lifecycle, guided by risk analysis and security best practices
- Help develop requirements and solutions for ground stations, including hardware and software solutions
- Define data flows (data plane, management plane, and control plane) for communication systems, and assist in creating automation logic for deployment and system resilience
- Contribute to defining CONOPS, system models, and workflows to develop service interfaces and user applications
- Assist in developing scripts and automation procedures to streamline application deployment (experience with Azure is a plus)
- Support the transition of transmission analysis (e.g., link budget calculations) into software-based, service-oriented solutions
- Work effectively with cross-functional teams across time zones to develop next-generation SATCOM technology
- Contribute to technical documentation, proposals, and presentations when required
Required Qualifications: - Successfully complete a written assessment
- Hold a BSEE with 6+ years of experience or an MSEE with 4+ years of experience
- Must reside in the DC Metro area or be willing to relocate
- Demonstrate strong teamwork and collaboration skills
