Position Overview

This role is part of the Facilities Engineering team within the Natural Gas Business Unit (NGBU). You will primarily serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for electrical engineering on large capital design projects. Responsibilities include design review and oversight of external engineering and construction contractors.


Key Responsibilities

Electrical Layout and Design

  • Develop facility layout designs
  • Coordinate existing and new underground utility planning
  • Design of underground conduits and duct banks
  • Grounding and lightning protection system design
  • Cathodic protection design

Power Distribution Engineering

Proficiency in the following areas is essential to support design reviews and field operations:

  • Medium and Low Voltage Switchgear
  • Motor Control Centers (MCCs)
  • Medium and Low Voltage Transformers
  • Panelboards and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
  • Electrical protection and coordination for MV and LV systems
  • Short circuit and arc flash studies
  • Design and installation of MV/LV cables, including cable trays and conduit
  • Cable termination techniques
  • Conduit sealing for hazardous areas (Class I, Div 1 & Div 2)
  • DC power systems including batteries, chargers, inverters, and protective devices

Controls Engineering

  • Understanding of controls for switchgear, MCCs, standby generators, and automatic transfer switches
  • Proficiency in PLC systems (analog and digital)
  • Knowledge of RTUs and Modbus communication protocols
  • Experience with process instrumentation (sensors, detectors, transmitters)
  • Network architecture expertise

Utility Coordination

  • Define scope of supply with EPC contractors
  • Monitor utility schedules and maintain coordination
  • Facilitate communication between Utilities and EPC teams
  • Provide field activity oversight to ensure alignment with project timelines

System Integrator Coordination

  • Develop scope for HMI/PLC systems
  • Ensure review of EPC documents by system integrators
  • Support system commissioning to meet operational, documentation, and customer requirements

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develop scopes of work and technical specifications
  • Assist with the creation and evaluation of RFPs
  • Coordinate with internal departments, consultants, and contractors
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration to manage project interfaces
  • Address and resolve design and construction issues
  • Manage design changes and maintain quality control
  • Review procurement, construction, and design documentation
  • Evaluate compliance with relevant codes and standards
  • Perform on-site walkdowns and inspections
  • Validate installations against design requirements
  • Verify accuracy of as-built documentation
  • Incorporate security requirements from Duke Energy and NGBU into facility designs
  • Ensure contract and technical compliance within designs
  • Participate in budget and schedule reviews
  • Develop internal policies, templates, and design guides for NGBU electrical engineering practices

Required Qualifications and Responsibilities

Educational Background

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from a four-year college or university, with accreditation from ABET.
  • A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor's degree.

Experience

  • Minimum of 8 years of practical engineering experience.
