Overview

We are looking for a Senior COBOL & RPG Developer to join our mainframe modernization team, with a focus on supporting cloud-native development teams during the migration of legacy systems to modern platforms. You will play a critical liaison role, bringing deep expertise in COBOL, RPG, JCL, and related mainframe technologies to help cloud engineers interpret, understand, and replatform complex business logic and batch processes.

This is a highly collaborative role, ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of legacy and modern technology stacks.

Responsibilities

Your Impact:
  • Analyze existing COBOL, RPG, JCL, and related legacy codebases to extract business logic, data flows, and processing rules.
  • Work closely with cloud-native development teams (e.g., Java, Python, React js) to translate mainframe logic into modern equivalents.
  • Participate in technical workshops and design sessions to explain legacy code functionality and dependencies.
  • Support data migration efforts by helping interpret file structures (VSAM, flat files), database mappings (DB2, IDMS), and batch processing flows.
  • Collaborate with architects and engineers to identify appropriate modernization strategies (replatform, refactor, rewrite).
  • Help identify edge cases, hidden dependencies, or potential risks in the legacy code.
  • Assist in validating migrated functionality against original mainframe behaviour.
  • Create or contribute to technical documentation capturing legacy logic, interfaces, and assumptions.
Your Skills & Experience:
  • Hands-on experience with COBOL, RPG, JCL, VSAM, and mainframe development tools.
  • Strong understanding of AS/400 or IBM iSeries environments (for RPG support).
  • Familiarity with DB2, IDMS, and file-based data processing.
  • Solid experience working on large, business-critical mainframe systems.
  • Proven ability to analyze, debug, and document complex legacy applications.
  • Experience working on mainframe migration or modernization projects.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills - ability to explain legacy code clearly to modern engineers.
  • Experience with tools such as File-Aid, Xpeditor, DMLO, CA7, ChangeMan, or equivalent.
Qualifications
  • Exposure to cloud environments (e.g., Azure, AWS, or GCP) and modern technologies like microservices, APIs, or event-driven architectures.
  • Experience in hybrid teams involving legacy and cloud modernization.
  • Familiarity with API integration, batch-to-stream conversion, or legacy wrapper patterns.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
