Are you passionate about public rights of way? Do you have experience in definitive map work and are you looking to develop your career in a leadership role?

The Countryside Access Service is looking to recruit a Senior Definitive Map Officer to work alongside our Principal Definitive Map Officer to manage the county's definitive map duties. North Yorkshire has the largest network of public rights of way in the country and has a correspondingly high workload of applications to amend or modify the Definitive Map.

Our Service

Our Countryside Access Service consists of two teams, supported by a small team of Countryside Access Technical Officers:

  • Public Rights of Way Maintenance Team, responsible for the maintenance of the County's extensive public rights of way network, unsealed road network and coastal path.
  • Definitive Map Team, responsible for keeping the legal record of the public rights of way network, the Definitive Map and Statement, up to date.

The Role

As Senior Definitive Map Officer, you will support the Principal Definitive Map Officer to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and good practice guidance in the exercise of its definitive map functions.

You will manage a team of seven Definitive Map Officers and four Countryside Access Technical Officers, overseeing the investigation of applications to modify the Definitive Map & Statement, process applications to divert public rights of way, and ensure work is carried out accurately and timely.

The role is based at County Hall, Northallerton, with a hybrid working model allowing remote work and site visits across the County as needed.

What you will bring

  • A relevant degree or equivalent, or significant experience in public rights of way and definitive map functions.
  • Experience in staff supervision and excellent communication skills.
  • Attention to detail, time management skills, and proficiency with software including Microsoft Office, databases, and GIS systems such as CAMS and Mapinfo.
  • Ability to understand, modify, and produce maps.

What you can expect

Opportunities for professional development, training, and career progression in public rights of way, contributing to countryside access improvements in North Yorkshire.

What We Offer

Salary plus benefits including:

  • Local government pension scheme
  • Family leave, salary sacrifice schemes, flexible working, learning and development, career growth, employee discounts, green schemes, travel loans, etc.
