Senior Construction Accountant or Assistant Controller

Base Salary: Senior Construction Accountant: $85,000 - $95,000
Assistant Controller: $100,000 - $115,000
About the Opportunity
On behalf of our client - a rapidly growing construction development firm - we are seeking a Senior Construction Accountant or Assistant Controller to support and scale the accounting operations of their active real estate portfolio.
This individual will play a pivotal role in managing project-level financials, coordinating with lenders and vendors, and driving accuracy across all construction accounting functions. You'll work closely with the development and project management teams to ensure seamless financial execution across multiple active projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Draw Coordination & Oversight:
- Lead the monthly construction draw process, compiling, analyzing, and submitting draw packages to financial institutions.
- Cash Flow Management:
- Monitor and project cash flow balances to ensure timely funding and payment requirements are met for each project.
- Bank Reconciliations:
- Prepare and review all monthly bank reconciliations across development accounts.
- Vendor & Contractor Payments:
- Manage weekly check runs to ensure consistent and accurate payments to vendors, subcontractors, and general contractors.
- Budget & Variance Analysis:
- Analyze construction budgets and perform monthly variance analyses comparing actuals to budget for each active project.
- Lender Compliance:
- Review loan documents to interpret lender covenants and financial reporting requirements in collaboration with the development team.
- Financial Reporting:
- Prepare and deliver monthly reporting packages for internal stakeholders and lending institutions.
- Process Improvement:
- Assist in refining and ensuring compliance with accounting and development processes and procedures to support company growth.
- Cross-Functional Communication:
- Serve as a key financial liaison with Project Managers, lenders, contractors, and vendors, addressing operational and project accounting topics such as pay applications, receivables, and payables.
- Strategic Growth Participation:
- Contribute to the company's broader strategic initiatives by providing financial insights and supporting scalability efforts.
What We Are Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- 4-5+ years of progressive accounting experience within construction management, general contracting, or subcontractor industries.
- Strong understanding of the construction draw process and project-based accounting.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel; familiarity with accounting and construction management systems like Procore preferred.
- Highly organized, proactive, and capable of thriving in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable taking ownership of responsibilities and striving for operational excellence.
