Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced Composite Manufacturing Engineer to lead the development and optimization of composite manufacturing processes for advanced aerospace structures. This role plays a critical part in scaling production from prototype to rate manufacturing while ensuring high standards of quality, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. The engineer will collaborate closely with design, production, quality, and supply chain teams to deliver manufacturable and reliable composite components.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and optimize composite fabrication processes, including hand layup, automated layup, curing (autoclave and oven), trimming, bonding, and structural assembly.
- Create and maintain detailed manufacturing work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and process documentation.
- Lead the transition of composite designs from prototype to high-rate production with a focus on scalability and cost-efficiency.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles to reduce cycle times, material waste, and labor hours.
- Conduct Process Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (PFMEA), support root cause analysis (RCCA), and manage corrective/preventive actions.
- Oversee and support First Article Inspections (FAIs) and ensure readiness for production and regulatory audits.
- Collaborate with supply chain and tooling engineers to define material specifications, tooling needs, and vendor readiness.
- Ensure compliance with aerospace quality standards, such as AS9100, and adherence to FAA production requirements and safety guidelines.
Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering (or related field).
- 10+ years of hands-on experience in composite manufacturing for aerospace applications.
- In-depth knowledge of carbon fiber materials, resin systems, prepreg handling, and advanced layup techniques.
- Strong background in Lean manufacturing, DFM, SPC, and RCCA methodologies.
- Familiarity with aerospace quality systems, FAA production regulations, and composite testing/inspection standards (e.g., ASTM, NADCAP).
Preferred Skills: - Experience using CAD and PLM systems such as Siemens NX and Teamcenter for design and manufacturing documentation.
- Knowledge of automated composite manufacturing techniques, including AFP (Automated Fiber Placement) and ATL (Automated Tape Laying).
- Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and Statistical Process Control (SPC).
- Background supporting FAA-certified production environments or working in regulated aerospace manufacturing facilities.
