Job overview The Cardiothoracic unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital performs 700 adult cardiac surgical cases per annum. As well as the usual range of myocardial revascularization and valve replacement procedures, the case mix comprises complex thoracic aortic surgery, mini mitral valve repair, minimally invasive coronary and valve surgery, and off-pump coronary surgery.

The Department of Clinical Perfusion provides additional support when required to the Cardiology Angiography Suite, and is working alongside Cardiologists and Intensivists on an emerging MCS program for Cardiogenic Shock.

The Department is currently looking to recruit a Senior Clinical Perfusionist, making a total establishment of 9 qualified perfusionists and 2 trainees.

The Clinical Perfusion team are currently supporting our 8th and 9 th Bristol MSc trainees as they progress through their training. The ability to provide mentoring and pastoral support to our students is a key part of this role.

The position is full time permanent contract based around a 4-day working week, but the department is optimized for work life balance and open to discussing part time or flexible and work patterns also. Participation in the on-call rota will be required - this is currently at a frequency of 1:6 with 4.5% uplift and additional calls paid hourly on NHSP. Please ask for details.

  • Provide significant, highly specialist, autonomously managed, direct care delivery.
  • Responsibility for the continual development and delivery of training packages related to perfusion science, specialist devices and specialist techniques to trainees and members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide highly specialist advice directly related to care delivery and technical aspects of treatment.
  • Undertake significant out of hours commitment for autonomously managed, direct care delivery on a rota basis.
  • Assist the Clinical Perfusion Manager directly in procurement, maintenance, servicing and troubleshooting of a range of high value equipment and specialist clinical devices.
  • Allocation of daily duties appropriate to skill mix in the absence of the Clinician Perfusion Manager or Deputy Manager.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities Accreditation by Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.

A minimum of two years post-accreditation experience.

Postgraduate knowledge of routine and highly specialized techniques, e.g. Inta Aortic Balloon Pumps.

Demonstrate continuing professional development towards re-accreditation and re-registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.

Deliver specialist training to others where appropriate.

Advanced computer literacy and keyboard skills.

Conversant with health and safety guidelines (Trust-wide and national) related to the use of particular devices, techniques, drugs and solutions.

Evidence of policy and/or protocol development and post- incident reporting.

Networking: being able to work within and outside of the department, with credibility out of area.
