Senior Clinical Fellow in Colorectal Surgery

Job summary

Applications are invited for a fixed-term (12 months) Locally Employed Senior Clinical Fellowship in the Colorectal department based at Royal Derby Hospital starting in October 2025.

This post is a one-year fellowship designed to provide intensive training in advanced minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic rectal surgery, transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS and TEO), and single incision laparoscopic surgery.

The department is looking for an enthusiastic, experienced individual to join a forward-thinking and proactive colorectal team of 9 consultants.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain substantial training in minimally invasive surgical procedures.

You will also be expected to run independent 2-week wait clinics and support the team across all areas of elective activity, including theatres, day cases, outpatients, endoscopy, and ward rounds. You will be a senior team member, providing leadership and support to junior doctors.

The appointee will participate in the department's undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs. The department offers exposure to a wide range of services, teaching, and research opportunities.

Fellows will have protected time for research and should aim to produce two manuscripts by the end of the fellowship.

There is an opportunity to participate in the middle-grade on-call general surgical rota (1:17) - 50% slot.

Job responsibilities

Clinical sessions include:

  • Training in advanced minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic rectal surgery, TAMIS, TEO, single incision laparoscopic surgery)
  • Endoscopy, working towards JAG accreditation if required
  • Ward rounds
  • Research and teaching

Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK and have Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice at the time of application.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent
  • Higher Degree (PhD or MSc)
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice at application
  • Life Support Qualifications BLS/ALS
  • Additional relevant higher medical/scientific degree
Clinical Knowledge & Skills
  • Post-CCT (General Surgery) or within 12 months of CCT completion
  • At least four years of postgraduate training (full-time or equivalent)
  • UK experience in General Surgery
  • Postgraduate Teaching Qualification
  • Minimum 1-year NHS experience
Teaching, Audit & Research Experience
  • Experience supervising and teaching residents and students
  • Active participation in audit
  • Ability to apply evidence-based research in clinical practice
  • Good publication record or formal teaching experience
  • Teaching courses or qualifications
  • Leadership skills evidence

Salary: £70,425 per annum plus enhancements for out-of-hours work.
