Senior Chemist Reporting To: Senior R&D Manager SUMMARY: The Senior Chemist will be qualified to degree level or equivalent and have at least 5 years' experience within cosmetic development. They will be responsible for taking product briefs from concept through to completion working closely with the sales teams associated with those projects. They will be required to delegate and oversee the work of Laboratory Technicians and Junior Chemists and oversee their training and mentorship. Senior Chemists report to the Senior R&D Manager. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Review new Product development requests (PDR's) and collaborates with respective Sales Executives for further clarification if required and ensure successful completion of the project. Formulate OTC and non- OTC personal care, skin care, hair care and sun care products leveraging in depth knowledge of chemical Ingredients and processes that meets the desired technical and aesthetic attributes outlined by customers on PDR Effectively manages multiple projects within established timelines, prioritizing tasks to ensure timely delivery and optimal outcomes. Prepare lab batches of formulas needed for submitting samples for customer analysis within lab schedule, and reformulating / resubmitting them based on customer's feedback Designs, develops and evaluate new formulations for various product types ensuring compliance with the FDA and Global market regulations. Complies and analyzes test data to identify areas of improvement, recommending future actions based on research findings to refine formulations and achieve desired results. Optimize formulations to improve performance, cost-effectiveness, and production efficiency. Stay current with emerging ingredients and technologies in the cosmetic industry, incorporating innovative solutions into new products. Provide Sales Executives and customers technical support, participation on account teams and teleconferences Maintain thorough documentation of all R&D activities in accordance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards. Collaborate with Packaging team if required to ensure that formulations are compatible with various packaging systems and materials. Work closely and collaboratively with junior level chemists, to teach, coordinate and collaborate on projects leading to well-planned and executed bench work and successful sample submissions. Develop detailed lab scale process for success including order of addition, critical raw materials and processing parameters, bench standard and benchmark, and lab scale preliminary specification and test results Work closely with the production team to scale up formulations from the lab to pilot and commercial production. Evaluate and troubleshoot production issues and develop strategies to improve manufacturing processes to maintain product quality. Collaborate with Regulatory team to ensure product consistency and meet all compliance requirements. Attend conferences, workshops, and other professional development opportunities to further expand expertise in cosmetic formulation and development Contribute to the development of internal knowledge databases, SOPs, and training materials for the R&D team. Take reasonable care for the health and safety for yourself and other persons who may be affected by your work. Adhere to a cGMP environment, document and follow lab procedures with attention to detail. Help create a positive work culture, by continually coaching a safe working environment. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 5+ years of experience in cosmetic formulation development and R&D Bachelor's degree in chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or related filed. Master's degree in Cosmetic science or related field preferred. Strong time and project management skills. Knowledge of basic regulatory requirements(FDA, CTFA and PCPC) for formulation. Ability to supervise and mentor Junior chemists. Knowledge of current good manufacturing practices(cGMP) Professional oral and written communication skills. Good problem solving and decision making skills. Displays a sense of urgency and initiative with creativity and flexibility. Able to work in a fast paced environment.
