Job Title: Senior Automation Designer - Mechanical

Location: Cambridge, Ontario (Onsite)

Position Summary:

We are seeking a Senior Automation Designer - Mechanical with extensive experience in designing mechanical automation systems for high-speed production environments. The ideal candidate will be proficient in creating innovative, cost-effective solutions for custom equipment, integrating technologies such as pick & place systems, conveyors, bowl feeders, and robotics. This role requires strong technical skills in mechanical design, hands-on experience with SPMs (Special Purpose Machines), and the ability to lead and mentor a global design team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop high-speed automation equipment, including material handling systems, pick & place mechanisms, vision inspection stations, and robotic integration.
  • Perform detailed engineering calculations (stress, force, speed, torque, etc.) relevant to mechanical and automation design.
  • Create 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and BOMs using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Select appropriate mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic components (e.g., LM guides, sensors, servo motors, LVDTs, switches).
  • Lead a team of up to 15 offshore designers, providing technical guidance and review.
  • Evaluate and select components such as bowl feeders, conveyors, material handling systems, and sensors for automation lines.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable standards (OSHA, CE, ISO, and customer-specific standards).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (electrical, software, fabrication, and assembly) to ensure project alignment and successful delivery.
  • Liaise with customers and vendors for technical input, approvals, and component selection.
  • Supervise mechanical design efforts, delegate tasks, manage documentation and ensure design quality.
  • Support the build, integration, and debug processes on the shop floor.
  • Contribute to the development of design best practices, templates, and departmental standards.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in mechanical automation and SPM design.
  • Expertise in Pick & Place systems, bowl feeder selection, conveyor design, sensor integration, and robotic systems.
  • Strong understanding of pneumatics, hydraulics, and electrical devices (switches, load cells, etc.).
  • Proficient in SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Excellent understanding of drafting principles and mechanical fabrication techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of materials and component selection.
  • Ability to manage and mentor design teams (onshore and offshore).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Familiar with ISO standards and health and safety compliance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience with low-cost automation and high-speed production environments.
  • Familiarity with vision inspection systems and integration.
  • Previous experience in custom machine building or automation industry.
