Position Supervisor: Marnee Zazueta Department/Office: Chino Valley Agribusiness Center Pay Rate: $16.00 per hour, 0-25 hours per week depending on department need, availability of funds and student eligibility. This position will gain marketable work experience by working with Yavapai College staff, Faculty and affiliates in a group effort to support the mission, goals and values of Yavapai College. The Agriculture Field Lab Tech must have a good knowledge of plants and fish, be able to effectively care for the greenhouse area, and other areas of the campus including the equine arena. They should like working outdoors and be physically fit. They need communication skills in order to interact with students, staff and the public. Knowledge of computerized control systems for maintaining an automated and controlled environment, good communication skills, basic analytical skills, and attention to detail are preferred. Working towards an Agriculture Degree or Certificate is required. Finally, they should be dependable, able to take direction and able to work independently or as part of a team. All hiring documents must be completed prior to first work shift, including acceptable documentation for the I-9 Form. Federal Work Study (FWS) eligibility, applicants must: Have current aid year FAFSA verified and on file at Yavapai College Be funded for at least 6 credit hours while employed in this position Be in good financial aid standing at Yavapai College Have unmet need as determined by the FAFSA Be receiving their financial aid from Yavapai College Prepare soil; plant bulbs, seeds and cuttings; graft and bud plants; and transplant seedlings and rooted cuttings Feed fish on a set schedule Maintain appropriate water quality, temperature, and clarity in the aquaculture facility Trouble shoot problems with the facility and communicate your findings Spray shrubs, flowers and plants to prevent disease and pests Set-up and regulate greenhouse and outdoor irrigation systems to water plants Transplant trees, shrubs, flowers and plants and prepare them for sale Provide information to students and the public during student work time and tours Use computers to communicate and find needed supplies May operate tractors and other machinery and equipment to mow, rake and maintain facility Student workers split their time between greenhouse and the outdoors. When working in greenhouses they are in environments with temperature, ventilation, humidity, light and water all controlled to keep an optimum greenhouse. They will perform many manual duties that include lifting; stooping, kneeling or standing for long periods of time. The hours of work per week are 20 during the summer and 15 during the school year. The work schedule will need to be flexible to accomplish the jobs and coordinate with faculty and staff. The start date, to occur no sooner than July 1st of the current aid year, of this position will be determined by the hiring supervisor after an applicant is hired. This position has a standard end of assignment date of June 30th of the current aid year. Assignment may end sooner or be extended depending FWS eligibility, availability and/or department need.
