Job Description
The Pathology Laboratory, as part of Research, Local Delivery Translational Sciences (LDTS) at the Abbvie Irvine site is responsible for developing, validating and performing investigative pathology-based methods to help pathologists and other scientists characterize compound induced effects related to target organ injury in animal and human tissue, characterize animal models of disease, develop target engagement endpoints, characterize local drug biodistribution, and address key questions that advance drug discovery and development projects. The Pathology Lab Scientist II serves as a subject matter expert to colleagues and project teams to explore how pathology-based techniques may be useful for addressing key project questions. The Pathology lab also performs specialized ocular histology, and coordinates with other groups to ensure timely completion of routine histology.
The Pathology Lab is seeking a Pathology Scientist II. As a member of a small team, this individual will contribute subject matter expertise in Pathology and coordinate closely with other group members and supervisor to perform immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, image analysis, morphometry, and related digital imaging tasks. This individual should be comfortable in designing quantitative or semi-quantitative histology imaging analysis experiments, and documenting, interpreting, and presenting the results to project teams. This individual should also be a self-starter who is eager to learn and thrives in a collaborative, fast paced environment, with a desire to make an impact by interacting closely with scientists from other disciplines and functional areas.
Specific Responsibilities include:
- Independently, or in collaboration with Pathologist or other scientists, designs experiment, interprets data and presents results to project teams and at functional meetings.
- Writes formal study reports for submission to regulatory agencies as needed.
- Performs or coordinates with image analysis experts develop and apply histology image analysis algorithms, including the use of machine learning/artificial intelligence, where appropriate.
- Contributes to histology and IHC lab operations by purchasing supplies and equipment, coordinating maintenance, and ensuring safety compliance.
- Contributes to discussions and decisions of what technologies and equipment the Pathology Lab should invest in for the future.
- Identifies opportunities to address project questions using Pathology-related techniques.
- Mentors and trains junior staff on immunohistochemistry, histology and imaging techniques.
- Maintains awareness of current technologies in Pathology and image analysis.
Qualifications
Education and experience
- MS + 5 years experience, or BS with + 7 years experience in research pathology lab.
- HT or HTL Certification by ASCP, plus specialty certification in immunohistochemistry (ASCP) desirable.
- Demonstrate leadership and initiative and ability to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to train and indirectly oversee work of others
- Knowledge and experience in investigative pathology techniques/tools
- Experience with pathology laboratory equipment, including specialized microscopes, scanners, immunostainers, and operation of computer system software for image analysis.
- Strong knowledge of cell and molecular biology.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated record of successful collaborations with scientists, including those from different disciplines and areas of expertise.
Preferred Experience
- Ocular histology
- Experience with multiple immunofluorescent assay development
- Experience with RNAscope in situ hybridization assay development
- Experience with image analysis software such as HALO and VisioPharm, ideally including algorithm development using machine learning/artificial intelligence approaches.
