STEM DEPARTMENT
The STEM Department at JLA provides students with a course sequence of deep and rich
curricular core classes and electives. The goal of our program is to develop an appreciation of learning and ignite curiosity and critical thinking.
The Middle School offers honors and advanced high-school classes:
Earth and Space
Physical Sciences
Life Sciences
Middle School electives include honors health science and botany classes.
The Upper School core curriculum offers honors and advanced college-level classes:
Biology
Chemistry
Physics (algebra-based and calculus-based)
Electives include advanced college-level classes in environmental science, anatomy and
physiology, biotechnology, microbiology, organic and biochemistry, and sound and wave physics.
JLA's multifaceted pedagogical approach combines Socratic discussions, design thinking,
inquiry-based learning, guided experimentation, and project-based learning. Laboratory
demonstrations and paced protocol experiments are embedded in every course. Advanced-level classes emphasize open-ended experimentation, inquiry, case analyses, and mentor-guided innovative research.
Teachers will lead teams in robotics leagues and engineering competitions. JLA's multifaceted pedagogical approach uses a blend of Socratic discussions, design thinking, and guided experimentation, transitioning to project-based learning in advanced classes.
POSITION
We are seeking a teacher who can teach science in the middle- and upper-school-level classes and who can possibly support robotics.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Full-time employment for faculty teaching positions will commence on August 1, 2025.
Responsibilities will include:
20 teaching periods per week (5 periods daily M-Th)
Advisory, media literacy, research, service learning, or mentorship role as part of our
unique Friday schedule.
Tutorial sessions twice weekly
Robust professional development throughout the year
Special onboarding and leadership programming with students for the first 3 weeks of
the school year
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience at the middle/upper school level, as well as a strong foundation in classroom pedagogy. He/She must have an undergraduate degree in a related field, though advanced degrees are preferred. Experience
working with gifted and talented students is an asset.
In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

Mastery of Google Workspace for Education and an overall comfort with new technology.
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

An understanding of project and inquiry-based learning as well as design thinking.
