Job Summary
The Sanitation Supervisor directs and oversees the activities of the nighttime Plant Sanitation Team. This includes sanitation duties and tasks related to the daily cleaning/sanitizing of various work environments/buildings, internal and external property, machinery, production equipment, production lines, tools, and parts. At times, this role requires a hands-on approach. Therefore, the manager must be able and willing to perform various hands-on sanitation duties and tasks while working alongside team members.

This position takes an active role to meet established sanitation standards, following the Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS) to achieve 100% on-time completion of tasks and duties. This role is critical to maintain and continually improve a workplace culture of food and human safety.

The role will work with the Director of Sanitation to develop and implement sanitation continuous improvement initiatives including but not limited to: Sanitation Management programs/systems, training, SSOP/OPL creation, micro improvement and prevention measures, each shift /daily/weekly sanitation tracking and validation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Be a culture advocate for food safety, human safety and continuous improvement; Drive the goal of Zero Food Safety incidents related to sanitation; Zero injuries; Continuous improvement.
Act as a role model for all sanitation team members; Provides hands-on leadership when necessary to support the broader team.
Drive priority while leveraging various group leaders to complete objectives.
Receive and on-board new hires; Own the departmental on-boarding process; Plan and deploy development for each team member.
Foster positive relationships with team members, other members of the organization and Agency leadership through great communication.
Promote a team environment and resolve conflicts with positive outcomes.
Supervise sanitation effectiveness; Ensure MSS is followed and fully completed; Work with Quality Assurance to ensure established levels of sanitation and cleanliness are met for all facilities.
Performs audits/inspections of the sanitized facility to ensure appropriate level of cleanliness.
Ensures team members are properly trained in the use of chemicals and procedures; Ensures team members follow all proper steps in the sanitation process; Ensures all team members thoroughly rinse between an acid chemical cleaning and a base chemical cleaning so no unwanted chemical reactions occur keeping team members safe.
Effectively communicate to the Director or Sanitation the need to augment/change the MSS as business changes, operations change, or deficiencies are identified; Work to eliminate a future sanitation failure.
Create and communicate weekly staffing schedule; Modify staffing schedule as necessary due to production plan changes; Remain nimble to perform special sanitation efforts as needed.
Leads sanitation team member development; Coaches, mentors, and trains team members on new and existing training programs, procedures, policies, etc.; Refreshes training periodically; Facilitates training within the department; Delivers training programs related to sanitation, regulatory requirements and best practices.
Schedules cross-training between team members to ensure the department is proficient in all tasks and duties; Develops group/area leaders.
Leads large, small, and individual team meetings and communication sessions.
Ensures compliance with all programs, policy, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and training requirements.
Enforces all Company policies and procedures with special emphasis on food safety, cGMPs, and human safety; Collaborates with Director of Sanitation and holds team members accountable for policy or procedural infractions, as well as poor behaviors.
Evaluates individual and group team member job performance.
Manages employee relations and the working relationship between The Company and team members. Examples include but are not limited to: complaints, absences, respect/workplace violence, problem solving, forms of harassment, behaviors and subsequent accountability, etc.
Supports Director of Sanitation and the broader Quality Assurance team during inspections and audits; Is Flexible (shifts hours as needed) to attend and support on site audits (i.e., SQF, FDA, Customers, Government, etc.)
Ensures appropriate company provided PPE and clothing is properly worn to safely complete various duties and tasks.
Finds and implements cost savings ideas including but not limited to chemical inventory, etc.
Assists to clean and sanitize equipment and production areas with water and chemicals to establish food safety standards.
Performs lock out tag out to isolate machinery energies in preparation of detail cleaning.
May disassemble machinery to clean and sanitize machine parts; May reassemble machine parts once cleaned and sanitized.
Properly utilizes hand tools, scrub pads, etc. to clean machinery, work surfaces, floors, walls, drains, etc.
May perform various functions related to sanitation activities, especially when leading by example or assisting the training of other team members to include but not limited to:
Trash Removal
Operation of trash compactor
Use of a compliant air gun to blow product off and out of machinery
Sweep floors.
Squeegee floors
Pick up product and debris and place in trash receptacle.
Rinse floors and equipment
Spray down equipment with foam cleanser
Spray down equipment with acid
Scrub equipment
Proper use of power hoses and nozzles
Proper use of all PPE; Special focus on use of cut proof mesh gloves.
Participate in pre-op inspections.
Performs environmental testing.
Performs pre-operational checks, examining manufacturing equipment and facilities to ensure proper sanitation; Works to ensure on-time post-sanitation start up.
Reports all defects (i.e., machinery, tools, PPE, etc.)
Follows all OSHA safety guidelines that are required by the company. Actively works with on-duty safety supervisors to solve safety related concerns.
Supports special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position directly oversees 10 to 14 group leads, 20 shift cleaners, and 40 sanitation employees. This role works in a collaborative environment and will have to plan and delegate tasks to various personnel.

Education and Experience:
Bachelors Degree in applicable areas (Food Science, Food Industry Compliance) and 1+ year in a hands-on food manufacturing/processing environment preferred or 3+ years of direct sanitation, quality, or production leadership experience in a food manufacturing/processing environment required.
High School Diploma or GED required.
Experience with the use of industrial food manufacturing cleaning chemicals; Knows how to read a Safety Data Sheet.
OSHA 10- or 30-hour training preferred; Exposure to some OSHA / Safety training required.

Required Skills/Abilities:
Ability to read and interpret documents (i.e., Safety Rules, Chemical Labels, Safety Data Sheets)
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
Strong planning and time management capabilities (Ability to stay ahead of the need).
Ability to problem solve.
Strong leadership abilities.
Ability to lead and work in a team.
Knowledge of human and food safety, HACCP, and cGMPs.
Prior experience with SQF is preferred.
Able to speak, read, and write Intermediate level English language; Bilingual language skills highly preferred (Spanish, French Creole).
Must be able to work scheduled hours, weekends, and holidays; Must be able to flex time to support various audits; Must be willing when needed to work outside of predetermined hours.
Ability to collaborate across boundaries.

The production facility and associated warehousing are refrigerated facilities, which means this position must be able to work in a cold, wet, and loud environment for long periods of time with the proper personal protective equipment (PPE). This position will also be exposed to moving mechanical parts (locks and tags provided); heights (fall protection equipment provided), and vibration.

Food Safety/Maintenance:
All food safety and quality problems must be brought to the attention of someone with authority such as your Supervisor, Quality Technician or Quality Manager to initiate action, if necessary.
