About the Department:

Development and External Affairs (DEA) supports SMU by securing funding for University priorities; by promoting meaningful involvement in the life and work of the University; by heightening international, national, state and local awareness of SMU; and by supporting the enrollment of a diverse and able student body.

DEA comprises the offices of Office of the Senior Vice President, Annual Giving and Alumni Relations, Development Services, Program Services and Donor Relations, Marketing and Communications, Principal and Major Gifts, and School and Project Development.

About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The Salesforce Marketing Cloud Administrator is an expert in technical solutions, specializing in the Salesforce Marketing Cloud platform.

As a member of the Salesforce Marketing Cloud leadership team, this position partners with several departments to design user journeys for engaging alumni and prospective donors, ensure data integrity, and leverage data sets for mass communications.

Responsibilities include user management, audience building, automation, training and communication preferences. Additionally, this position monitors and analyzes the performance of email campaigns, providing insights and recommendations for improvement.

Essential Functions:
  • Collaborate with the Office of Information Technology, Marketing & Communications, Development Services and Annual Giving &Alumni Relations departments, colleges, units, and stakeholders, to source and integrate data, and manage technical work in support of mass communications. Use SQL to create and manage data extensions, ensuring accurate and efficient data storage and retrieval.
  • Design, build, and execute email campaigns and complex journeys using Salesforce Marketing Cloud tools such as Content Builder, Journey Builder, Automation Studio, Web Studio, and Email Studio.
  • Oversee the setup, maintenance, and optimization of the Preference Center to ensure it aligns with business goals and regulatory requirements. Provide support and training to internal users on how to manage and utilize the preference center effectively. Generate reports and insights on user preferences and engagement, providing actionable recommendations to the university.
  • Monitor and manage contacts and subscribers to ensure high deliverability rates and maintain data quality. This includes performing regular audits, implementing data hygiene practices, and troubleshooting any issues related to email deliverability and subscriber management.
  • Work closely with team members to provide comprehensive training and support. Facilitate the adoption of the platform by demonstrating its capabilities, best practices, and strategic value to users.
  • Provides end-user support, communicates system changes, resolves issues promptly, and ensures customer satisfaction. Conducts analytical troubleshooting, investigates bug reports and resolves data anomalies.
  • Stay updated on the latest trends and best practices in email marketing and Salesforce Marketing Cloud. Proactively recommend process improvements to optimize platform administration, operations and integration with other Development and External Affairs technology.
  • Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required.
Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree is required, Master's preferred. A degree in Technology or Communications desired.

A minimum of five years of work experience is required. Experience in configuring and maintaining Salesforce, CRM, communication and marketing platform is required. Experience with digital marketing is also required.

Experience working in the higher education industry is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills. A strong customer service orientation is essential.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills. A strong focus on attention to detail is essential.

Candidate must have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with BlackbaudCRM and integration tools are preferred. Experience with Asana is desired.

Certification in Salesforce Marketing Cloud and Salesforce Sales Cloud is a plus.
