We are currently seeking a Sales Consultant for our client to support the Cooperstown and Oneonta regions. The Sales Consultant embodies a "Service as a Strategy" mindset, focused on driving profitable sales by offering expert advice to customers on exclusive brands and product differentiation, menu management, and market trends. The Sales Consultant establishes and nourishes strong relationships with customers, driving new customer acquisition, account penetration and the prevention of loss of business. The Sales Consultant effectively utilizes all technological tools and partners with subject-matter-expert relationships, such as culinary, chemical and vendor partners, to demonstrate to a customer the value of doing business with our client. The Sales Consultant performs their work within an assigned geographic territory and with strict embodiment to the company's Core Values and professional conduct standards.


Essential Functions:

  • Prospects new customers within their assigned geographic territory, utilizing brokers, internal partners, and other resources.
  • Maintains, services, and penetrates existing customer base in the assigned geographic territory.
  • Holds effective consultations with customers, emphasizing the value of ordering by providing expert advice on exclusive brands, menu management and product differentiation.
  • Leverages the sale of exclusive brands to drive gross profit beyond established goals.
  • Utilizes promotions and other initiatives to increase sales volume and gross profit.
  • Maximizes customer satisfaction by helping the customer identify the best way to interact with our client, including in person ordering, Pepper, Power Sell, and utilizing the Customer Solutions team.
  • Quotes and negotiates prices and deploys sales strategies to meet case plan and drive profitable growth.
  • Creates customer order guides to make it easier for customers to do business.
  • Either in partnership with the Culinary Specialist or on their own, samples products and performs product cuttings directly with existing customers or prospects.
  • Collects payments on accounts according to established terms to ensure adequate cash flow to the company.
  • Maintains current, detailed and accurate customer and prospect information in the Hub.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assesses the work environment at new and existing customer locations, and reports safety issues promptly in accordance with company policy and procedure.
  • Participates in all company sales meetings and events.
  • Reviews sales reports / pricing lists in order to manage and coordinate work activity.
  • Maintains effective relationships with all company departments to ensure effective and profitable service of our customers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of food and food ingredients, and their preparation.
  • Working knowledge of non-food products, and their purpose and application.
  • Ability to develop and maintain knowledge of company products and products/activities of competitors.
  • Highly motivated. A self-starter.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to develop and manage a working funnel of sales opportunities.
  • Ability to identify and pursue business development opportunities; build relationships across the industry including manufacturers, vendors, customers, and strategic partners.
  • Strong English language aptitude, including the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing (including the use of texting and email).
  • Strong active listening skills, necessary to understand the needs of customers and others.
  • Ability to diffuse tense situations.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Internet Explorer.
  • Ability to learn, without assistance, company-specific computer programs.
  • Ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and without constant direct supervision.

Education/Experience (Preferred Minimum Qualifications):

  • Possession of a high school diploma AND at least ten (10) years of foodservice or sales experience OR
  • Possession of an associate's degree from an accredited college or university in the field of Business Administration, Sales, Marketing or related field AND at least eight (8) years of foodservice or sales experience

Licenses/Certifications/Special Requirements:

  • Subject to pre-employment, random, and reasonable suspicion drug screening.
  • Must be available to perform job duties during evenings and weekends.
  • Frequent travel can be expected within the assigned service territory.
  • Sporadic travel requiring overnight stays is required.
  • Must maintain a valid driver license during the course of employment, with no DWI, DUI, DWAI convictions.
  • Must maintain minimum insurance requirements per company policy.
  • Must reside within or in very close proximity to assigned service territory.


Pay: $70,000 - 80,000, depending on experience
