Summary:

The Safety & Security Manager reports directly to the COO, with a dotted line to the CEO. Additional guidance is received through established policies and procedures, plus verbal & written communications. This position provides safety & security leadership & ensures compliance with corporate & governmental standards & regulations, implements safety & security directives, & improves safety & security performance. The Safety & Security Manager must implement & execute an occupational health & safety program & maintain a strong safety culture at all levels of our organization. This position is responsible for the 24-hour safety & security of the facility & physical assets. This position carries out supervisory responsibilities under Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens policies, AZA standards, & applicable laws. Must be able to work flexible hours, weekends & holidays. The ability to work indoors & outdoors is required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The employee in this position must be able to perform all the essential job duties listed below; however, this list is not intended to be all-inclusive of the specific tasks that an employee in this position may be expected to perform.
  • Act as a Zoo ambassador at all times & ensure our guests, visitors, staff, & animal collection feel safe, comfortable in & around Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens.
  • Facilitates a work environment that supports a safe & healthy culture.
  • Identifies best practices in zoo safety & security & leads continuous improvement initiatives to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness, improve safe work practices, & improve visitor safety.
  • Establish Safety & Security Officer training protocols for Safety & Security personnel. These training sessions should include but are not limited to: perimeter checks, radio usage, radio codes, incident report writing, investigative procedures, CPR, & Zoo-wide drill participation. Ensure that all Safety & Security Officers are provided appropriate training during the onboarding process & throughout the course of their employment.
  • Directs the Public Safety Department to ensure the protection, safeguarding, and security of employees, guests, and zoo assets and grounds. Ensures the security program is integrated into short and long-range strategies and plans. Directs all phases of zoo security with the public safety team.
  • Directs the security response for situations zoo-wide with a clear expectation of protocols and procedures for different responses. This includes zoo emergencies, reports of harassment to our animals or staff, guest needs, etc.
  • Directs the monitoring and evaluation of the perimeter fence and guest barriers.
  • Conducts, coordinates, or checks employee training in areas such as safety laws and regulations, hazardous conditions monitoring, use of safety equipment, CPR, first aid, AED, fire safety, severe weather safety, injury prevention and response, venomous bite prevention, and response, and animal incident prevention and response.
  • Maintains an annual calendar of emergency drills that meets AZA requirements. Works with internal departments and external resources to coordinate, facilitate, and document drills, including follow-up items and corrective actions taken. Uses drill structure as a tool to continually improve emergency response zoo-wide.
  • Performs risk assessments and safety audits and inspects facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards and to ensure safety regulation compliance.
  • Investigates accidents, near-miss incidents, visitor injuries, and occupational injuries to determine causes and install preventive measures. Reviews, updates, and maintains all incident and injury reports. Trains employees to fill out reports in a professional, error-free manner.
  • Coordinates with IT, Animal Operations and Facilities to direct the access control systems for the zoo, including keys and proxy.
  • Oversees, recruits, and trains the Safety Committee and coordinates all safety-related training. Holds meetings monthly and follows up on any identified safety concerns.
  • Provides technical advice, coaching, guidance, and mentoring to employees on safety initiatives.
  • Coordinate employee safety programs including the onsite response team.
  • Works with Zoo Animal Operations in dangerous animal response training.
  • Orders and maintains facility safety inventory, including supplies and personal protective equipment.
  • Works within company policy as outlined in the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens' Employee and Safety Handbooks and compliance with the AZA safety standards and OSHA safety rules.
  • Supervises the operation of the Safety and Security department based on current trends and needs; establishes priorities; maintains personnel costs within a set budget, interviews and selects staff; plans schedules and assigns work to staff; checks and approves work; reviews and evaluates employee performance.
  • Supports all departments in providing security and safety guidance for activities on the grounds.
  • Oversee the following safety programs: National Disaster Training, fire drill, smoke, and fire alarm maintenance, and inspections, injury drills, monitoring and maintaining all first aid kits, CPR / first aid training, maintaining SDS documentation, PPE, fall protection programs and training.
  • Maintain relationships and act as lead liason to outside agencys; police, fire , EMT and others as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with city, state and federal regulations including fire codes and FCC.
  • Ensures staff and contractors are following all SOPs, safety protocols and proper use of personal protective equipment.
Qualifications:

  • Five years of safety & security experience including two years of solid supervisory experience in a security related setting is preferred.
  • Understand how to implement and execute an occupational health and safety program and maintain a strong safety culture at all levels of our organization.
  • Ability to develop SOPs and other required regulations pertaining to the needs of the Safety & Security Department.
  • Ability to show solid leadership qualities and manage emergency/crisis situations with clear direction, communication, and sound judgement.
  • Demonstrates proactive approaches to problem-solving with strong decision-making capability.
  • Ability to train Safety & Security staff in safety protocol as well as other relevant security procedures as required.
  • Knowledge of security operations, safety practices, loss prevention strategies.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.
  • Must be able to function collegially in a team environment, apply sound management principles, tact, reasoning, prioritization and time management.
  • Actively support Central Florida Zoo's mission and strategic goals and have the ability to effectively represent the institution to other constituencies.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders, including staff, board members, external partners and donors. Must be able to build relationships with a diverse culture within the zoo.

Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree from college or university; five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable regulations (OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, AZA)
Language Ability:
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries, requests, or complaints from guests and/or staff in a kind and courteous manner.
  • Must be able to communicate with guests and staff clearly and effectively. Expert-level written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of CFZBG employees, managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Multi-lingual is a plus.
Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Valid Florida State Driver License.
  • A certificate in safety & security training from an established institution is preferred.
  • OSHA 10 required, OSHA 30 preferred.
  • CPR/AED Certified preferred
  • Wilderness First Aid/Blood Trauma Tourniquet Trained preferred
