Job Description
The Safety Section of the Traffic & Safety Bureau is a dynamic group of inspired individuals who enjoy the challenge of making Iowa highways safer while also providing efficient operations. We are looking for a Safety Data Scientist who wants to make a difference as a leader in the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) through their contribution to our Mission, Making Lives Better Through Transportation and our five Core Values: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception. Location: Ames, Iowa
Shift Requirements: Monday through Friday, flexible schedules are available.
Your main priority as a Safety Data Scientist will be to provide traffic safety data analysis and analysis guidance to the Department's Divisions and Districts, other state agencies, as well as to local units of government across the state. You will accomplish this goal through responsibilities including:
  • Managing crash data and data analysis through tasks such as:
    • Developing and maintaining analysis methodologies:
      • Iowa Crash Analysis Tool
      • Crash Reduction Factors
      • Safety Performance Functions
      • Highway Safety Manual
    • Querying large, complex datasets and applying advanced statistical techniques.
    • Updating guidance documents as methods are improved.
    • Collaborating with other Department of Transportation manuals and tools to keep safety information current and relevant.
    • Leading tech advisory groups and teams working to incorporate safety analysis in project delivery.
    • Providing crash data request support.
  • Administering Safety Engineering/Analysis consultant services.
    • Reviewing and managing budget, requests for service, scope, fees, and consultant contracts.
  • Developing and refining data visualization resources
  • Providing technical expertise on data sources and statistical methods

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1 ) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in business analytics, economics, data science, statistics, mathematics, management information systems, or industrial management, and experience equal to three years of full-time work in business/data/statistical analytics, economic research, or data science.

2) All of the following (a, b, and c):
a. Three years of full-time work experience in business/data/statistical analytics, economic research, or data science; and
b. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience in business/data/statistical analytics, economic research, or data science, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
c. Possession of a professional certificate in data science, business analytics, or data analytics.

3) All of the following (a, b, and c):
a. One year of full-time work experience in business/data/statistical analytics, economic research, or data science; and
b. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience; and
c. A total of two years of graduate-level education and/or full-time experience (as described in part a), where twenty-four semester hours of accredited graduate college or university coursework in business analytics, economics, data science, statistics, mathematics, management information systems, or industrial management equals one year of full-time experience.

4) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of full-time work as a Data Analyst 2.
