Rotational Clinical Pharmacist PROPEL Programme (B6 to B7 Progression)

Following significant investment by the Trust, we are seeking up to ten Band 6 or Band 7 pharmacists to join our PROPEL Programme (Plymouth Rotational Opportunity for Progression through Experience & Learning), a structured rotational development programme.

Applications are open to current trainee pharmacists, early-career pharmacists, those new to hospital pharmacy with experience in other sectors, or with specific visa requirements.

Depending on your knowledge, skills, and previous experience, you will join as either a Band 6 or Band 7 clinical pharmacist. You will be supported through our training programme and progression pathway, enabling you to develop a portfolio to prepare for advanced clinical practice and Band 8a roles.

This role is ideal for enthusiastic and motivated pharmacists, whether newly qualified or experienced, looking to further develop their clinical skills while gaining significant teaching, training, leadership, and management experience to aid career progression to more senior roles.

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who can demonstrate recent relevant experience as per the Person Specification.

Main duties of the job

PROPEL Programme (Plymouth Rotational Opportunity for Progression through Experience & Learning)

Band 6 Rotational Pharmacists:

  • Guaranteed progression to Band 7 after 18 months (subject to competency milestones)
  • Fully funded Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy with protected study time
  • Undertake 3-month core rotations including: Medical Admissions, Surgical Care, Older People's Healthcare, Paediatrics, Aseptic Services, Clinical Screening, and Medicines Information
  • Work laptop and mobile phone provided
  • Support and mentoring by experienced pharmacists
  • Relocation packages offered based on eligibility

Band 7 Rotational Pharmacists:

  • Eligible to apply for Band 8a roles within 18 months
  • Fully funded Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy with protected study time
  • Undertake 6-month core rotations including: gastroenterology, paediatrics and neonatal medicine, neurology, cardiology, respiratory, microbiology, critical care, urgent & emergency care, clinical trials, cancer services, aseptics, hepatology, patient safety, governance, formulary, clinical academic & research
  • Engage in audit, change management, quality improvement projects, supervision, formulary review, and medicines optimisation
  • Upon diploma completion, pursue fully funded Non-Medical Prescribing or other further studies such as MSc
  • Relocation packages available depending on eligibility

Job responsibilities

As part of the PROPEL Programme:

  • Participate in structured Band 6 core or Band 7 specialised rotations across pharmacy and clinical specialties, with learning outcomes aligned to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Frameworks
  • Undertake fully funded further study, such as Diploma/Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy and Non-Medical Prescribing
  • Deliver high-quality clinical pharmacy services ensuring safe, effective, and economical medication use
  • Support ward-based services including medication history taking, medicines reconciliation, supply, patient consultations, medicines optimisation, discharge services, and other medicines management activities
  • Provide expert medication advice to clinical staff
  • Supervise and teach pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals
  • Engage in audits, quality improvement, and practice research projects
  • Participate in on-call and out-of-hours services as per rota
Person Specification Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience in pharmacy, e.g., foundation training or equivalent
  • Experience in UK hospital pharmacy
  • Understanding of the hospital pharmacist role in the UK
  • Completion of foundation training year in secondary care
  • Training in medicines information
  • Good pharmaceutical and clinical knowledge
  • Provision of ward-based clinical pharmacy services
  • Management experience, including supervising junior staff
Qualifications
  • 4-year Master's Degree or equivalent in Pharmacy, plus 1-year pre-registration training
  • Current GPhC registration or pending
  • Working towards Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/MSc in Clinical Pharmacy
  • Additional clinical, research, or management qualifications
  • Evidence of research or project work
  • Current RPS registration
  • Member of UKCPA
  • Working towards RPS faculty submission
  • Willing to undertake Non-Medical Prescribing training if not already qualified
Aptitude and Abilities
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal
  • Understanding of NHS priorities

Salary: £37,338 to £52,809 per annum (B6 to B7 progression)
