Job Summary and Qualifications

Provides safe and effective nursing care to assigned patients utilizing the nursing process. Responsible for the direction and supervision of personnel assigned to deliver that care.

What you will do in this role:
  • Recognizes potential for increased stress related to dependency needs of others; i.e., children and elderly parents.
  • Assesses altered perceptions resulting from change from independence and productive status to dependence and curtailed productivity.
  • Recognizes anxiety regarding potential changes in body image and lifestyle resulting from illness.
  • Identifies increased physical/emotional dependency needs and availability of support networks.
  • Assesses potential for compromised skin integrity and initiates preventative measures when needed.
  • Determines increased risks for nutritional deficiencies.
  • Notes changes in elimination patterns.
  • Identifies increased sensitivity to climate changes.
  • Determines presence of disabilities affecting mobility or sensory acuity.
  • Assesses potential for increased educational needs due to compromised ability to comply with therapy and interventions.
  • Analyzes information from initial assessment to identify outpatient discharge planning needs and integrates into the plan of care.
  • Completes admission assessment and reassessments within designated time frames per policy.
  • Identifies patient's problems and develops the plan of care.
  • Reviews and evaluates the care plan, updates and documents the patient's progress toward resolution of problems at each visit.
  • Discusses patient's needs for continued care with health team members at each visit.
  • Solicits feedback from caregivers as to patient's response to nursing intervention.
  • Reviews new medical orders promptly and implements accordingly.
  • Assesses patient status and reports pertinent changes to physician promptly
  • Collaborates with others in planning patient care. Responds promptly and accurately to meet patient's needs.
  • Assists in a Medical Alert according to protocol until a physician arrives.
  • Demonstrates ability to modify interview technique to assess/identify physical, psychological and educational needs.
  • Provides for safety measures. Assesses risk for falls and implements appropriate safety precautions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medications to be administered, including the medication's effects, side effects and potential adverse reactions. Involves patient/family/significant other in decision making related to patient care.
  • Delegates patient care responsibilities to assigned care givers based upon patient needs and staff competencies.
  • Collects samples from patients including blood, urine, etc via peripheral and/or central venous access devices.
  • Immediately disposes of biomedical and hazardous waste in labeled bio-medical/bio-hazardous waste container.
  • Adheres to hospital policy and procedure regarding site care, tubing changes, and site rotation of IVs and all central access lines/devices.
  • Administers and documents medications and therapies in accordance with physician order following the Five Patient Rights (Right patient, medication, dose, time, and route).
  • Safely administers blood and blood products according to hospital policy and procedure. Administers PO, SC injections, chemotherapy drugs and other medications according to hospital policy.
  • Schedules radiological studies and makes follow up patient appointments and/or follows up on patient appointments as needed.
  • Correlates theoretical knowledge with clinical practice by using Nursing Process.
  • Cooperates with other health team members in achieving common goal of quality health care.
  • Assumes responsibilities for quality care of his/her shift.
  • Adheres to legal responsibilities as written in The State of Florida Nurse Practice Act.
  • Performs other related functions as assigned. Assesses patient/family/significant other's learning needs, abilities and readiness to learn.
  • Identifies barriers to learning, such as language or culture. Integrates this information into the patient's plan of care.
  • Identifies and documents patient/family/SO's education needs in collaboration with other disciplines and implements an on-going education relevant to these needs.
  • Explains tests, procedures, disease processes, medications and equipment to patient and family throughout the course of treatment.
  • Documents patient teaching on appropriate teaching tool for each teaching episode.
  • Provides teaching material as needed (pamphlets, video tapes, etc.) to enhance patient teaching.
  • Collaborates with other health care providers in developing a teaching plan for patient. Ensures patient/family/SO understand discharge instructions.
What qualifications you will need:
  • Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing required
  • BSN preferred
  • Florida RN license and/or approved multistate RN license required. Compact license holders have 60 days to obtain the Florida license after relocation
  • BLS-AHA Provider issued card required within 30 days of start
  • 2 years' experience required
  • ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Card required within 30 days of hire. OCN preferred
