OVERVIEW JOB TITLE: Resident Advisor LOCATION: St. Paul Campus DEPARTMENT OF RESIDENCE LIFE Through intentional relationship and community building, the Department of Residence Life provides an inclusive and supportive educational living environment where students develop skills and knowledge to think critically, act wisely, and work skillfully to advance the common good. POSITION OVERVIEW Resident Advisors are thoughtful, socially just, inclusive, present, and morally responsible peer leaders. RAs express these values and characteristics through community building, resident interaction, student leader education & development, and administrative responsibilities. RAs are committed to furthering student learning grounded in St. Thomas' mission and convictions. The RA position is focused on connection and relationship building; RAs must be willing and motivated to engage, connect with, and outreach to residents. RAs will promote student learning through implementation of a variety of educational strategies to achieve the Tommie Advantage learning goals: self-understanding, connecting, embracing our differences, practice holistic well-being, and acting wisely. POSITION EXPECTATIONS Community Engagement + Strive to foster an inclusive environment and sense of belonging for residents of all of identities, including but not limited to: race, ethnicity, gender identity, biological sex, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status and background, religion, disability, and national origin + Facilitated education & development will be provided to better prepare you for fostering this inclusive environment where residents feel a sense of belonging + Be present and actively engaged with their residential community + Facilitate connection among residents through events and other engagement opportunities + Promote student learning for residents through facilitated community meetings, roommate and community conflict resolution, community communications, and other Tommie Advantage strategies + Support residents in building interdependent relationships and practicing accountability in their communities + Assist in disseminating information to keep residents fully aware of learning opportunities, policies, news, & procedures + Create and maintain virtual community through a group chat + Understand, create, and maintain an environment that supports academic achievement and success + Confront behaviors not in accordance with the student code of conduct and community standards + Appropriately use professional authority while maintaining respectful relationships with residents Resident Interaction + Demonstrate an understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, & belonging in order to effectively serve, communicate with, and advocate for all students in our residential population + Engage in intentional, ongoing, meaningful connections with residents in your community, including 1:1 conversations and informal touch points + Support residents and refer them to appropriate campus resources for social, academic, and personal issues + Assist residents in listening with empathy and navigating conflict in a healthy manner + Promptly contact and connect with residents as requested by supervisor, our department, or the University of St. Thomas Student Leader Team + Communicate effectively, including engaging in constructive & respectful feedback with Community Director (CD)/Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) & student leader team + Collaborate in a team-focused work environment Administration + Manage position's time requirements and student responsibilities effectively + Complete relevant paperwork and tasks effectively and in a timely manner (i.e., Roompact forms, weekly reports, incident reports, maintenance requests, etc.) + Execute duty responsibilities effectively (i.e., serve at hall/area desk, complete duty rounds, submit duty logs, address policy concerns) + Assist in preparing and maintaining the living environment for residents (i.e., setting beds, arranging furniture, organizing common spaces, replacing room items, room/building check ins/move outs, etc.) + Support the health and safety of the residential space through ongoing and scheduled checks Education & Development + Must attend and actively engage in learning during all education & development sessions:Education & Development is an ongoing process starting with signing student leader agreement in April 2025 continuing through end of May 2026 including all team gatherings, one on one meetings with CD/GSA, community team meetings, and divisional and institutional sessions ELIGIBILITY + Must maintain a term and cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above + Must not be on Conduct Probation + Must maintain a full academic load during time in the position (12 or more credits) + Must be an undergraduate student STUDENT LEADER AGREEMENT INFORMATION Resident Advisors are: + Provided housing for the duration of their student leader agreement + May be assigned to live with another RA in an apartment, suite, or room + May be assigned to share community space, such as bathrooms, with residents + Provided the Unlimited Meal Plan + Paid a $450 stipend + Bi-weekly payments according to the University payroll schedule + State and Federal taxes will be deducted from these payments if appropriate TIME COMMITMENT & IMPORTANT DATES (APRIL 2025 - MAY 2026) Time Commitment The RA position is time-consuming and is expected to be the principal out-of-class time commitment. Some periods of time will have greater demand of a student leaders time (such as education & development, high check-in/check-out times, duty rotation, special activities, campus crisis, etc.) and all student leaders are expected to be available and respond as required. As a result, all student leaders are required to follow certain guidelines regarding outside interests: + Any formal commitments of an RA's timemust be discussed with CD/GSA prior to engagement in such activities + Any outside commitments, if approved, will be limited to atotal of 10 hours a week maximum + If at any time these outside commitments, even if totaling less than 10 hours per week, become a detriment to fulfilling my responsibilities, especially availability and visibility in the community, such commitments will be reevaluated with the CD/GSA and may need to be decreased or discontinued While in the RA position: + You cannot hold a full-time internship, participate in student teaching, or a similarly demanding practicum or internship, in either fall or spring semesters + You cannot participate in a semester long study abroad program + Due to extensive evening time commitments, you must discuss taking any evening classes with CD/GSA prior to registration + Due to Student Leader Education & Development in August, you cannot enroll in any Summer Session II courses or any other course that would interfere with fully participating in August dates + You must be available for residence hall openings and remain for all hall closings and safety checks; as halls are open over all breaks, you may be responsible for duty coverage during all or a part of those breaks (including Fall, Thanksgiving, Winter, J-Term, Spring, and Easter breaks) + You may not make travel arrangements for breaks prior to discussing them with your CD/GSA and assuring the building responsibilities are covered Ongoing Through the Academic Year: + Maintain RA position as primary out-of-class time commitment with no more than 10 hours a week total of outside time commitments + Effectively execute all expectations within the position overview + Attend weekly student leader team meetings and individual meetings with CD/GSA, Residence Life all student leader team meetings, and any additional required student leader team events + Serve the hall desk from 4:30 pm - 8:00 pm when on duty (student leaders in buildings without a desk will have "office hours" in place of serving at a desk) + Duty begins at 4:30 pm and ends at 8:00 am the following day + Duty responsibilities will also include coverage on all breaks + Attend ongoing education & development opportunities Important Dates In addition to the ongoing responsibilities of the RA position, there are important dates to keep in mind when planning for the upcoming year. Spring Semester 2025: + Attend all education & development meetings scheduled in the spring semester for newly selected and returning student leaders (April - May 2025) + Attend Student Leader Kickoff (Apr. 15, - 1 pm in ICF LL16) Prior to Start of Fall Semester 2025: + Commitment to position continues with move in (Aug. 9 - 10, 2025) prior to August education & development (starting August 11, 2025) + Be present for and actively participate in Residence Life August education & development sessions and responsibilities (Aug. 11 - 21, 2024), community move in days (Aug. 22 - Sep. 3, 2025), and Welcome Days (Aug. 27 - Sep. 2, 2024) + NOTE: During this entire timeframe (Aug. 11 - Sep. 2, 2025, including evenings and weekends), RAs should not plan to have any other commitments (i.e., classes, work, travel, internships, etc.) Fall Semester 2025: + Available to conduct resident and safety checks at semester start (Sep. 3 - 15, 2025) + October Student Leader All Team Meeting (Oct. 28, - 1:15 pm in Woulfe North) + Available to conduct safety checks during Thanksgiving Break (Nov. 26, 2025) + Available to provide duty coverage through Thanksgiving Break (Nov. 27 - 30, 2025) + December Student Leader All Team Meeting (Dec. 2, - 1:15 pm in Woulfe North) + Available to conduct safety checks during Winter Break (Dec. 19, 2025) + Available to provide duty coverage through Winter Break (Dec. 19, 2025 - Jan. 4, 2025) J-Term/Before Start of Spring Semester 2026: + Position is inclusive of J-Term and all responsibilities, including duty . click apply for full job details
