Description of Work Unit

The Research Compliance Services Office ( RCSO ) serves as the University's research compliance office, housing several well-established oversight programs. The mission of the RCSO is to protect the rights and welfare of research participants, provide guidance on research integrity issues, promote the responsible conduct of research, and work with the university research review committees to ensure that research is conducted ethically and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines.

The Office of the Vice President for Research has overall responsibility for promoting and facilitating the research enterprise at Colorado State University ( CSU ). The Office of the Vice President for Research will enable the University, its faculty, staff, and students to emerge as a world-class research institution complementing our learning, service, and outreach missions. The Office of the Vice President for Research will lead the 21st Century Land- Grant mission of CSU by fostering and supporting the research enterprise, promoting scholarship and artistry, instilling a culture of integrity, inclusion and diversity, and capitalizing on opportunities to address global challenges.

Position Summary

Colorado State University is seeking an Research Data Security Analyst to support our world-class research programs,. The team member in this position will serve as a steward for data security in the university's research environment, working alongside researchers who are reshaping our understanding of the world. This position is expected to collaborate with other administrative units such as DoIT, Security & Privacy, Office of Sponsored Programs, General Counsel and others related to issues of regulatory compliance and system security. As a member of the compliance team, this person will provide leadership in the evaluation, planning and execution of research compliance related activities, and be the primary contact within OVPR for projects that include Controlled Unclassified Information ( CUI ). We are seeking someone who has a background in regulatory compliance and is ready to provide information security leadership for the university's research community. Working adjacent to other offices within OVPR , campus administrative offices and academic units, this position will report to the university's Facility Security Officer and will interface with researchers across the university and will be expected to cross-train and provide backup to staff on the OVPR's information security team. Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year institution of higher education plus three years of specific professional experience directly related to the duties of this position or 7 years of directly relevant professional experience can be substituted.
  • Documented background in regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to collaborate with others in a team-oriented environment.
  • This position involves access to technology that is subject to U.S. export control law. Any job offer made will be contingent upon the applicant's capacity to serve in compliance with U.S. export control law.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Experience working with researchers in higher education or a related field.
  • Experience navigating complex security standards and frameworks.
  • Experience in two or more of the ISC2 knowledge domains:

Essential Duties

Duty/Responsibility
  • Serve as a data security analyst focusing on federal compliance with the Controlled Unclassified Information program.
  • Work with researchers and administrators to assess federal contracting requirements aligned with the CHIPS and Science Act.
  • Evaluate, design, and document compliance with NIST 800-171 and similar regulatory requirements. Work with CSU Division of IT and System IT to provide reports to key stakeholders.
  • Develop and provide programmatic support to the CUI committee.

  • Coordinate with Research IT, Division of IT, export controls, researchers, and administrative staff to develop and execute project-specific security compliance plans
  • Create and deliver training program for contract/grant officers, colleges and departments, and researchers covering data security and compliance requirements.
  • Work with Office of Sponsored Programs to create contracting work-flows and post-approval monitoring.
  • Maintain web page with up-to-date guidance and resources for CUI .

  • Support the implementation, development and onboarding of projects, systems and data to off-site secure enclaves.
  • Cross train on security technologies and regulations to provide security team support
  • Develop processes to meet NIST IT Controls for secure enclave access.
  • Advise and assist in developing policy to support security controls across the CSU System security enterprise.

  • Perform annual internal audits of CUI program
