Leidos is seeking a Research Chemist to augment research conducted by the Environmental Health Effects Laboratory (EHEL) at the Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton, OH. The successful candidate will perform as a Research Chemist to augment inhalation and occupational exposure research studies and analyses to identify health effects before health and operational performance is compromised in the warfighter. Research efforts will require extensive background in use of analytical chemistry equipment and how equipment capabilities can be used to enhance and bolster research. Performance of routine and non-routine use, set-up, maintenance of analytical chemistry devices, to include the preparation of devices for specific research protocols, operation of devices during testing and data collection, routine preventive maintenance of devices, troubleshooting and data collection and recording from research conducted on the devices is integral to this position. The Challenge: + Work alongside a diverse team of scientists, including toxicologists, engineers, neuroscientists, chemists, psychologists, animal behaviorists and biologists, to accomplish the mission of understanding the health effects of operating in military settings. + Lead method development for analytical and extraction techniques for detecting and quantifying chemicals, and their metabolites, metals, proteins and small molecules in different matrices (e.g., tissues or environmental samples). + Collect analytical data from environmental samples, animal subjects, and cell/tissue models and support research projects requiring analytical endpoints. + Assist other investigators in the design and execution of research proposals and protocols on animal, human and cellular physiology and toxicology, as well as performance issues of interest to the Navy. + Trouble-shoot, operate and maintain standard and specialized analytical equipment. + Assist and educate entry level research assistant personnel in the understanding and performance of their duties. + Develop (and assist in the development) technical reports, presentations, and publications. + Be willing and able to work nontraditional hours (e.g., nights, weekends) as needed. + Opportunity exists to develop and/or contribute to the design and execution of scientific research on responses to exposure to chemicals/mixtures/toxicants, extreme environmental hazards, or stressors. + Opportunity may exist to perform statistical analyses using SigmaPlot, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) or Statistical Analysis Software (SAS). Examples of the typical analyses required include T-tests, Chi-Square, Analyses of Variance, Multivariate Analyses of Variance, analyses of covariance, multivariate analyses of covariance, correlations, linear regressions, multiple linear regressions, and power analyses. + Perform other duties as needed. What Sets You Apart: + Strong background in chemistry and/or biochemistry. + Master's or Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field, with at least 2 years of experience in analytical techniques and method development or 4 years of experience conducting chemistry or biochemistry research, including analytical method development and sample processing, data analysis, and report production. + Strong background in extraction methods and analytical method development and analytical equipment. + Familiar with troubleshooting, maintaining and operating various analytical instrumentation, such as HPLC, GC/MS, LC/MS, QTOF, FTIR, and/or ICP-MS. + Experience with (but not limited to) working with volatile organic chemicals, metals, nanoparticles, and/or other xenobiotics and their metabolites. + Experience working with different sample materials, such as urine/blood, tissues, filters and various other matrices. + Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. + Strong technical writing background with experience in writing research proposals, standard operating procedures, technical reports, journal articles, and conference papers. + Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively in a team environment. + Self-motivated and capable of working independently and with others. + Ability to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level. Preference will be given to a candidate who already has this clearance level, but current clearance is not required. + Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required. You Might Also Have: + Master's Degree with 10+ years of experience or a Ph.D. with 2 or more years experience + Experience in animal subject research preferred. + Experience in human and animal physiology a plus. + Experience in a military or medical research environment is highly desired + Proficiency in the use of common statistical analysis software, to include SigmaPlot, SPSS and SAS, is a plus.
