Essential Functions

General supervision required: Must have technical skills in the maintenance and construction of substation protective relay and SCADA control systems. Candidates will perform Relay C&M activities in accordance with Duke Energy relay construction and maintenance standards. The performance of relay maintenance activity will primarily include testing and repair of protective relays, functional testing, commissioning and repair of relay protection systems, repair and testing of SCADA control systems at Generation, Transmission and Distribution facilities.

The Relay Technician will support the planning and scheduling of crew work activities. Maintain accurate records and operate all tools and test equipment used to maintain substation protective relay systems; the ability to interface with other people to make maintenance activities work smoothly. Dependent on region, may be subject to callouts, overtime, and overnight travel as necessary to support work and attend training in other locations.

Must demonstrate basic computer skills and have basic knowledge of Relay related software.

Responsible for practice and set an example of safe job performance. Must possess good communication skills, including working with others to create good working conditions.

Support of Corporate, group, department, and unit goals with conduct instrumental in projecting a proper image for Duke Energy and its employees.

Self-motivated with good leadership qualities that include good field decision-making skills.

Additional Qualifications/Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum four (4) years of Relay experience performing field protection, SCADA, and Control work and the ability to pass PRA (Personal Risk Assessment) seven (7) year background check.

Relay Tech will assist a higher-level technician and sometimes lead a lower level technician in activities associated with Relay construction, maintenance, and SCADA.

Incumbents are expected to continue developing complex skills.

Firm understanding of safe work practices and safety culture

Firm understanding of relaying, protective schemes, controls, alarms, Transmission and Distribution SCADA, communications

Capable of writing isolation procedures and independent reviews

Demonstrates good verbal communications skills

Complete understanding of print reading, print marking processes

Thorough understanding of Human Performance tools, skills, and techniques

Can test relays with RTS

Understanding of ASPEN and reporting

Complete understanding of NERC compliance and importance for accurate data and timely completion

Skilled at trouble shooting P&C circuits

Ability to think methodically and arrange activities in logical order

Firm understanding of CT and VT circuits

Understanding of Carrier and Tone equipment

Fully trained in operation of lulls, forklifts, and aerial devices

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
