Examples of Duties

A Registered Nurse Trauma Registrar completes abstracts and enters data for the trauma registry and maintaining related records and databases for the Trauma Center at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC);

Completes concurrent abstraction and entry of trauma data from the trauma patient medical record and other relevant sources into applicable electronic data software in compliance with applicable regulatory, reporting and accreditation requirements;

Analyzes patient data and develops recommendations of performance improvements; assists in the implementation of performance improvement actions;

Completes concurrent performance improvement data collection and analysis utilizing trauma registry data and related sources for quality improvement measures compliant with applicable regulatory, reporting and accreditation requirements;

Communicates with ECMCC departments and outside medical providers to obtain documentation necessary for trauma data entry and process improvement;

Codes injury diagnoses, severity and procedures using Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) International Classification of Diseases (ICD) classification systems for performance improvement review; modifies AIS and ICD codes for data entry as needed;

Reviews trauma registry data records and makes necessary corrections to maintain data accuracy and completeness;

Prepares individual patient case reviews for departmental and interdisciplinary process improvement committees;

Prepares a variety of reports and makes presentations;

Maintains internal trauma database and files to facilitate retrieval of data;

Participates in and may organize meetings, committees, educational programs, seminars, in-service programs, reorientation programs, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before February 5, 2025 (see note 3):

Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and three (3) years of registered professional trauma-related nursing experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Registered Nurse in New York State at the time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and
  • Completion of a minimum of eight (8) hours of trauma-specific continuing education on an annual basis; and
  • Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from an ECMCC approved provider at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and
  • Possession of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification from an ECMCC approved provider at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and
  • Completion of the Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) Course as administered by a Society of Trauma Nurses (STN)-approved course provider within thirty-six (36) months of initial appointment; and
  • Completion of Trauma Registrar Course (TRC) as administered by American Trauma Society (ATS) within twelve (12) months of initial appointment; and
  • Completion of Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and Injury Scoring: Uses and Techniques course as administered by Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM) within thirty-six (36) months of initial appointment.
Notes:

1. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements.

2. Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. A list of acceptable companies who provide this service can be found on the Internet at You must pay the required evaluation fee.
3. Educational and/or age requirements must be met no later than 12 months past the announced exam date. Eligibility for appointment will be subject to candidates providing proof that education and/or age requirements have been met within one year of the announced exam date. Documentation/proof of education and/or age should be provided at time of interview.
If documentation does not prove that requirements were met within one year of exam date candidates will be removed from further eligibility for appointment.

Notice to Candidates: Transcripts will now be accepted by the Department of Personnel ONLY at time of application.
All subsequent transcripts must be submitted at time of interview.

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION:

The only subject of examination will be an evaluation of your training and experience. You are therefore, asked to include in your application a summary of all pertinent training and experience in sufficient detail so that your background may be evaluated against the duties of the position.
In your summary of training, include all college course work, formal in-service training, and seminars you have attended. You must specify either the number of credits received or the number of contact hours and dates of attendance. Also include a copy of your professional license. Specify the date that your license was first issued.
In your summary of experience, you must specify the dates of your employment, the number of hours worked per week, your title, and the main duties for each. Be specific; vagueness and ambiguity will NOT be resolved in your favor. Candidates who submit incomplete applications or documentation may be disqualified.
