Registered Nurse First Assistant- Operating Room

Full-time 40 hours weekly

Monday -Thursday (10-hour shifts) with on-call responsibilities for nights, weekends, and holidays.

Location: Union Hospital - Cecil Campus - Elkton, Maryland

We are seeking a Registered Nurse First Assistant to assist the Surgeon during the operative procedure. The selected RN will maintain the standards of nursing practice and functions within the limits of Christiana Care policies.


Detailed Responsibilities:

  • Assist the attending surgeon during surgeries as a first assistant; perform specified tasks under direct supervision following RN first assistant training.

  • Assist with positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient.

  • Provide hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels, and other means as advised and supervised by the surgeon.

  • Provide exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques.

  • Handle tissues as advised by the surgeon.

  • Suture fascia, subcutaneous, and skin tissues under the direction of the surgeon, if desired by the surgeon.

  • Place and suture drains as advised by the surgeon.

  • Apply surgical dressings and assist in transferring the patient from the operating room.

  • Demonstrate skills related to the management of clinical emergencies.

  • Maintain knowledge in selected areas regarding clinical issues.

  • Care for patients of all ages, considering their growth needs, and interpreting information to meet patient needs.

  • Function on the patient care unit, applying the nursing process to assess, identify problems, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care for the perioperative patient.

Education and Experience Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in nursing or equivalent experience is required.

Current licensure by the Maryland State Board of Nursing.

Two years' experience in perioperative nursing practice.

Complete an approved education program following the RN First Assistant Core Curriculum guidelines.

Certified in Operating Room Nursing (CNOR).

ACLS certification is recommended.

Meet the requirements of statutes, regulations, and institutional policies relevant to RN First Assistant.


The successful candidate may be eligible for a $10,000 sign-on bonus to be paid over a period of 12 month
