We're searching for a Registered Nurse First Assist in our Cardiovascular Surgery Department, someone who works well in a fast-paced setting. In this position, you will assist the surgeon with specific pre-operative, intraoperative, and post-operative surgical procedures that are beyond the scope of practice for registered nurses without RNFA (Registered Nurse First Assistant) education and training.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensure that the assessment includes a systematic approach, patient's condition, developmental age, current practice standards of the specialty unit, and adherence to Operating Room Standards of Practice and Protocols (AORN Standards) specific to the O.R.
  • Collaborate with other team members to develop, coordinate and implement a perioperative plan of care unique to individual patient needs
  • Maintain dignity of patient while assuming the responsibility of patient advocate
  • Skillfully apply principles of asepsis and infection control
  • Possess knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and operative technique specific to cardiovascular procedures to work in collaboration with the surgeon
  • In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, follow selected cardiac surgery patients postoperatively to evaluate the outcome of perioperative nursing care e.g. positioning, wound healing surveillance etc.
  • Demonstrate consistent, positive interpersonal skills, communication, and customer service skills in dealing with patients, families and visitors
  • Respond to requests in a reasonable, courteous, and timely manner

Skills & Requirements
  • Required bachelor's degree in nursing
  • Required associate's degree in nursing with acceptance or current enrollment in a BSN program and signed agreement or an associate's degree in a related field accepted by the Texas Board of Nursing for the purposes of obtaining and maintaining an RN license
  • Required technical diploma in nursing with acceptance or current enrollment in a BSN program and signed agreement
  • Must be currently enrolled in a nursing bridge program working toward an MSN. Verified BSN-equivalency or a signed agreement is required
  • Required licenses and certifications:
    • RN - Lic-Registered Nurses by Texas Board of Nursing or Nursing Licensure Compact
    • CNOR - Cert-Cert Nurse Operating Room by Competency and Credentialing Institute
    • BLS - Cert-Basic Life Support by American Heart Association
  • Preferred licenses and certifications:
    • PALS - Cert-PALS by American Heart Association
  • Required at least 2 years of operating room nursing experience
