The Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking highly motivated and talented individual for the position of Recreation & Athletics Specialist 3 at the Washington Corrections Center (WCC) in Shelton, Washington.
The Washington Corrections Center is a Reception and Diagnostic Center. The facility is a close-custody facility with the primary responsibility to process, test, and classify all adult male felons sentenced to prison in Washington State. The facility has seven living units and houses 1,700 incarcerated individuals. There are about 500 incarcerated individuals screened and assessed each month. WCC is also the major hub for transfer of incarcerated individuals to and from facilities throughout the state.

Duties
The Recreation & Athletics Specialist 3 ensures that overall Recreation program meets the needs of both the facility and incarcerated individual population.

This position will plan, organize and direct a majority of all recreation activities to include gym, yard, weights, intramural leagues, photos, and cell activities. This position may have responsibility for other special events and/or family centered programs.

Some duties will include but are not limited to:
  • Plans program and organize all physical activities to encourage participation of all eligible incarcerated individuals.
  • Organizes and runs special holiday events.
  • Prepares and maintains records pertaining to equipment inventories, purchasing and tracking.
  • Responsible for hiring an incarcerated individual porter and assigning duties.
  • Assists with the fee based weightlifting program.
  • Assists with the incarcerated photo program in the gym.
  • Assists with the incarcerated hobby program.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Valid Driver's License
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Microsoft Office computer Skills to include Word, Excel and Outlook.
Preferred/Desired:
  • A bachelor's degree involving major study in either (A) Recreation or Therapeutic Recreation, (B) Music, Drama, Physical Education, (C) Psychology, Sociology, or Education with a Minor in Recreation, Physical Education, Music or Drama and two years paid professional experience.
OR
  • 6 years of experience in recreation, therapeutic recreation, music, drama, physical education, education, corrections, or a related field.
AND
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sports & social activities.
  • Analysis/planning/execution of a successful recreation program.
  • Establishing/maintaining effective records and reporting systems.
