Additional Information: Please note that we are currently looking to hire staff for our Summer Camp program. Once the program concludes you will be given the opportunity to transition to Guest Services (Front Desk/Kids Club) or Activities (Gym, Fitness Floor, and Rock Wall) depending on department needs.
Administrative Duties Actively supports and upholds the City's stated mission and values. Employees of this class assist with day-to-day oversight of recreation activities and programs, while performing a wide variety of customer service-oriented tasks. These positions are under the supervision of the Facility/Program Site Supervisor or full-time tenure-eligible Recreation Staff. This position may be assigned as the on-site supervisor during a scheduled event, program or shift.
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES - Supervisory: This job does not have formal supervisory responsibilities; however, the Recreation Assistant may have lead worker responsibilities coordinating and monitoring the work of others during a scheduled event, program or shift when assigned as the on-site supervisor.
- Budgetary: This job does not have budgetary responsibilities but carries out day-to-day activities within the approved budget.
- Strategic Planning: This job does not have strategic planning responsibilities but carries out day-to-day activities in order to follow the stated goals and objectives.
- Policies/Procedures: This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with established policies and procedures and enforcing facility and program rules with Recreation participants.
- Compliance: This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with Federal, State and Local laws, rules and regulations as well as City policies and procedures.
- Council Communications: This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with Council's adopted priorities and direction.
- Reporting: This job completes Recreation reports as required (i.e. safety, incidents). This job does not have duties related to reporting to Federal, State and Local agencies.
Examples of the Work Performed EXAMPLES OF THE WORK PERFORMED (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY) All
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
- Arrives to scheduled facility on time and in proper uniform or attire.
- Opens and/or closes the facility as needed.
- Monitors the condition of the recreation facility or program space and equipment.
- Assists customers in checking in and out.
- Distributes, collects and properly stores recreation equipment.
- Maintains facility or program space set up such as chairs, tables, TV, audio, electronic equipment, fitness floor, etc.
- Performs basic custodial duties in order to maintain a clean Recreation facility such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, sanitizing, disposing of litter and stocking supplies.
- Suggests ideas for program and/or facility development.
- Sets up and breaks down equipment for classes, meetings and/or special events.
- Communicates with general public, program participants, parents and volunteers to explain program policies, procedures and activities.
- Collects money for facility-based programs and makes correct change.
- Performs various clerical duties utilizing standard office equipment including answering incoming calls, taking and transmitting messages, data entry and word processing.
- Maintains accurate written records of accidents and incidents that occur in recreation facilities or special events and notifies supervisor.
- Keeps accurate recording of time worked.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Childcare
- Provides care to infants, toddlers and young children while primary caregiver is using the Recreation facility.
Gym/Fitness Floor
- Oversees safe operation of cardio, circuit and free weight equipment.
- Assists customers with using gym and/or fitness equipment properly.
Climbing Wall
- Oversees safe operation of indoor climbing wall.
- Assists customers with using climbing wall equipment properly.
- Administers safety training to all potential climbing participants and ensures each participant has a signed waiver.
Summer Camp
- Supervise and ensure the safety of campers at all times
- Plan, lead, and participate in camp activities such as arts & crafts, sports, outdoor adventures, and team-building exercises
- Enforce camp rules and ensure a respectful, inclusive environment
- Communicate effectively with fellow counselors, camp directors, and parents as needed
- Encourage camper participation and foster a fun, engaging atmosphere
Qualifications MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS - Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Any combination of education, experience, and training indicating the ability to successfully fulfill the required knowledge, skills, and abilities of the job.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING - Six months of customer service experience in an environment such as retail, hospitality, food service or recreation (all positions).
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications (all positions).
Gym/Fitness Floor
- Familiarity with gym equipment such as scoreboards, basketball backboards, volleyball set-up and other equipment.
- Experience with a wide variety of sports.
- Experience working in a health, fitness or exercise facility.
- Previous or current exercise, aerobic or personal training certifications.
Childcare
- American Red Cross Babysitters Training course completion.
- Previous or current certification as licensed childcare provider.
- Experience providing childcare or babysitting services for multiple children at once.
Climbing Wall
- Previous or current climbing instruction certification.
- Experience working in an indoor climbing wall or club.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS - Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid Arizona driver's license.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, split shifts, evenings, weekends and holidays as needed to facilitate public recreation programs.
- Ability to work special events.
- Hepatitis B vaccination initiated within one month of employment and completed within one year (Aquatics, Site Supervisor, Arena Managers).
- Pre-employment background verification includes fingerprints for all recreation employees and for Aquatics employees a drug and alcohol screening.
- Attend bloodborne pathogen training.
- Ability to use household chemicals for general cleaning purposes.
- Required to obtain and wear proper uniforms as needed (Scorekeeper).
Supplemental Information REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY) - Knowledge of the objectives and principles of supervising public recreation facilities and activities.
- Knowledge of recreation equipment and supplies.
- Skills in using standard office equipment and software application programs.
- Ability to organize and implement recreation programs developed by Recreation Program Coordinators, Recreation Supervisors and/or Recreation Manager).
- Ability to handle money and make change accurately.

- Ability to lift, carry and set up tables, chairs, sound and lighting equipment, craft and art materials, recreation equipment and other equipment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT - Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Lifting requirements vary considerably based on assignment and area of facility assigned to. The employee may be required to occasionally lift 10 pounds and up to 25 pounds occasionally.
