Examples of DutiesJob Purpose Under close supervision is responsible for the direct leadership of a wide variety of recreation activities, nature activities and special events.
Essential Job Duties - Assists in the creating, planning, implementing, scheduling, promoting and coordinating of a variety of recreation programs, activities and special events in a heavily programmed recreation center, both indoor and outdoor.
- Plans and leads diversified programs and activities in the following categories: performing and cultural arts, sports, fitness, social and hobbies.
- Recruits, trains and coordinates the work of part-time staff and volunteers.
- Meets with local residents to determine recreational needs.
- Inspects facilities to make certain that structures, areas and equipment are safe, adequate and functioning properly.
- Prepares fields and diamonds for various sports at various locations.
- Prepares program statistical reports.
- May include regular maintenance of ball fields.
- Enter programs and permits into the registration software: CivicRec
- Work hours and weekly schedule vary week to week, weekends, and seasonally.

QualificationsRequired Education and Experience Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent;
Plus Two years' successful experience as a playground leader, recreation leader, recreation specialist, teacher, or worker in a closely allied field.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Entry Level) - A practical knowledge of the organization of leagues, clubs, tournaments, exhibits, demonstrations and entertainment
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and theory of programming recreational and leisure activities
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of community recreation
- Knowledge of CPR/First Aid
- Skill in at least three of the following types of activities: athletics, dramatics, story-telling, low-organized games, social recreation, informal discussion, nature study, folk dancing, music, handicrafts
- Sufficient skill in an appreciation of all activities conducted at a recreation center to develop a well-balanced, diversified program
- Communication skills
- Interpersonal skills
- Ability to secure effective use of volunteer leaders
- Ability to manage a recreation center, park, or related facility
- Ability to supervise and train staff
- Ability to recruit, train, and guide volunteers

Examination Procedure Qualified applicants will be assigned a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as submitted on their application and supplemental questions. Conditions of EmploymentPhysical and Environmental Conditions: The work of this classification entails some physical labor including walking over rough and uneven surfaces in the inspection of facilities and grounds, and some lifting and carrying of items.
The work entails travel to recreation and park sites, facilities, and meetings throughout the County.
Employees in this classification may be assigned to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

SalaryAnnual Salary review - Step increases may be granted on anniversary date based on satisfactory job performance
