Los Angeles Business Journal Real Estate Reporter Job Description


The Business Journal, one of the most well-respected business publications and media organizations in the country, is looking for a reporter to cover real estate. This role reports in-person to the LABJ office on a daily basis and does not offer remote work options. The Business Journal delivers a one-of-a-kind product to the elite executives of the Los Angeles area. Through the printed publications, robust digital assets and targeted business events (both digital and in-person) throughout the year, the Business Journal provides invaluable information and access to C-Suite executives throughout the region. In addition to a weekly print publication and online stories, the Business Journal puts out the Inside The Valley magazine six times a year, focusing on business news for the Valley region. We are looking for someone eager to jump into the real estate beat, covering everything from the biggest projects in the county to small firms taking unique approaches to selling real estate. You will be writing both feature stories and short news items in this role.


Roles & Responsibilities:

Pitch stories weekly.

Write a biweekly column.

Write news items as needed.

Write feature and special report stories.

Contribute to special editions like Wealthiest Angelenos and LA500.

Write magazine-style stories for our Inside The Valley magazine.

Meet with sources.

Occasionally attend relevant events.

Meet deadlines laid out by your editor.


Qualifications & Skills:

The right candidate is highly motivated, with a desire to join a culture dedicated to growth and achievement.

College degree (Journalism is a plus, but not required).

Strong interpersonal communication, computer, editing and writing skills.

Ability to shift to different projects and manage time effectively.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the flexibility to work on both team-based projects as well as independent projects.

Ability to develop sources. You will need to be able to communicate with valued sources on your beat. This will necessitate some in-person meetings with sources and occasional attendance at events.

Strong writing ability.

Knowledge of AP style.

Willingness to come into an office. We are entirely in person, starting at 8:30 a.m. daily.


Salary:$45,000-$55,000 a year depending on experience.

Schedule: Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Work Location: In person (90025); Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work.

Education: Bachelor's

Experience: Journalism: 1+ year (Preferred, we are also open to recent college graduates with relevant internships)
