Job Summary
The Senior, Staff, and Principal R&D Engineer performs research, design and development activities for a specific product or group of products from product ideation through manufacturing. Depending on the level, provides technical leadership and consulting to one or more projects in the development of disposable and reusable complex surgical products.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Product development and design of electro-mechanical medical devices and sub systems.
Conducts product testing, creates models, and prototypes, and provides constructive feedback to other design engineers.
For Staff or Principal Engineer, provides technical guidance to other engineers, leads problem solving efforts, and drives to technical solutions to complex problems.
Develop and execute engineering testing plans/protocols, test development, testing, analysis of data, and reporting.
Perform clinical assessments by observing surgical procedures and interacting with surgeons.
For Staff or Principal Engineer, develops pre-clinical protocols and leads studies.
Collaborates with peers to manage the development of appropriate testing to verify product meets internal and external customer requirements.
For Staff and Principal Engineer, provides technical strategic vision. Assignments are often self-initiated.
Work on highly complex technical problems and provide solutions that are highly innovative and ingenious to a broad range of problems. Leads or actively participates in idea creation and the reduction to practice of concepts.
Trains and mentor others in specialized areas.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proficiency with Solidworks and experience with GD&T and general dimensioning best practices.
Good understanding of mechanics, machine design and materials.
Rigorous academic background in engineering fundamentals.
Experience working with cross-functional teams.
Proficiency in product development processes from concept to production, including design control and FDA regulations.
Hands-on, ability to build and test product concepts and fixtures with a wide range of fidelity.
Education/Experience Required
Engineering Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Master's Degree preferred.
Minimum 10 years of professional hands-on mechanical design experience (Principal)
Minimum 5 years of professional hands-on mechanical design experience (Senior or Staff)
Minimum 3 years of experience in the medical device industry (Class II or III devices).
