1. Pre-Contract Phase

  • Cost Estimation & Budgeting:

    • Prepare bills of quantities (BoQs) for mechanical components (e.g., pumps, valves, compressors).

    • Conduct feasibility studies for industrial systems (e.g., steam networks, refrigeration plants).

  • Tender Management:

    • Evaluate subcontractor bids for specialized mechanical work (e.g., welding, pressure vessel installation).

    • Advise on procurement strategies for long-lead items (e.g., turbines, heat exchangers).

2. Post-Contract Phase

  • Contract Administration:

    • Administer NEC3/NEC4 or JCT contracts, managing variations, claims, and interim valuations.

    • Negotiate with suppliers of mechanical equipment (e.g., bespoke machinery, automation systems).

  • Cost Control:

    • Track costs for mechanical installations (e.g., ductwork, piping, conveyor systems).

    • Monitor labour and material expenditures against budgets.

  • Risk Management:

    • Assess financial impacts of design changes (e.g., pipe routing adjustments, equipment substitutions).

    • Mitigate risks linked to delays (e.g., supply chain disruptions for imported machinery).

3. Project Delivery

  • Valuation & Reporting:

    • Certify progress payments for mechanical subcontractors (e.g., welding crews, fitters).

    • Prepare cost reports for stakeholders, highlighting deviations from budgets.

  • Final Account Settlement:

    • Resolve disputes over snagging, testing, or performance guarantees (e.g., pump efficiency tests).

    • Finalize lifecycle cost analyses for mechanical systems (e.g., maintenance schedules).

4. Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure adherence to CDM 2015 regulations for mechanical installations.

  • Budget for safety measures (e.g., confined space protocols, LOLER-compliant lifting plans).
