Job Summary:

The Purchasing Manager in the construction industry is responsible for managing the procurement of materials, equipment, and subcontracted services necessary for construction projects. This role involves developing purchasing strategies, negotiating with suppliers and subcontractors, and ensuring timely delivery of resources to job sites to keep projects on schedule and within budget. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of construction processes, materials, and vendor management.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the purchasing process for construction materials, equipment, and subcontractor services.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors.
  • Solicit and evaluate bids, negotiate pricing, and prepare purchase orders and contracts.
  • Coordinate with project managers, estimators, and site supervisors to forecast and meet project needs.
  • Ensure timely delivery of materials and services to construction sites to prevent project delays.
  • Monitor material costs, market trends, and availability to maximize cost savings.
  • Maintain inventory control and manage logistics for storage and transportation of materials.
  • Evaluate supplier performance based on quality, reliability, and delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, company policies, and contract requirements.
  • Prepare regular procurement reports for project and executive teams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Supply Chain, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in procurement or purchasing, preferably in the construction industry.
  • Strong knowledge of construction materials, subcontractor scopes, and job site logistics.
  • Excellent negotiation and contract management skills.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with procurement or construction management software (e.g., Procore, Buildertrend, Sage, Viewpoint).
  • Ability to read blueprints and construction documents is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
