Summary
Under the general supervision of the Criminal Investigation Division Commander, this position is responsible for the training and supervision of Evidence and Property Technicians. This position serves as the Police Evidence and Property Custodian and performs the duties and responsibilities of an evidence and property technician.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervises, plans, and implements the operations of the evidence unit to maximize efficiency, utilizing all available resources
  • Works closely with other Municipal, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies and probation and parole offices
  • Performs all duties of the Evidence and Property Technicians, which include but are not limited to the receipt and scanning of incoming evidence/property into the computer to establish initial control and the visual inspection of each piece of incoming evidence/property
  • Maintains and coordinates all evidence/property matters involving other departments, labs, and attorneys, which includes the processing of open records requests and the handling of Firearms
    Performs daily evidence collection, marking, storage, and record keeping, and maintains off-site locations
  • Completes evidence management to include intake/disposal, transfers to other agencies and labs, accountability, preparing and receiving from lab, moving, and relocating evidence from lab, moving and relocating evidence, and disposal of evidence/property
  • Conducts daily, quarterly, and annual inventories of any items under the control of the evidence unit
  • Ensures evidence unit remains in compliance with records retention and court orders
  • Maintains alcohol, narcotics, guns, money, and any other items in the evidence unit
  • Prepares court testimony and testifies in various courts
  • Serves as a member of various employee committees
  • Maintains evidence and property area equipment, supplies, and facilities
  • Provides professional customer service, communicates with persons accused of crimes or convicted of crimes; exposure to those that may exhibit severe mental health conditions
  • Operates in conformance with federal, state, and local laws; adheres to departmental policies and safety procedures
  • Follows City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in law enforcement, forensic sciences, or related field
  • Two (2) years of experience in a supervisory role
  • Pass an extensive criminal background check, polygraph, and evaluation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in an evidence lab
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Valid Driver License
  • Property & Evidence Certification through TEEX (preferred)
  • Texas Association of Property and Evidence Inventory Technicians (TAPEIT) Property & Evidence Certification (preferred)
