Project Engineer - BESS & Interconnection (Solar + Storage Projects)
Jersey City, NJ (Hybrid: Tues-Thurs Onsite) Up to $130K Base + 20% Bonus
A growing distributed energy company is hiring a Project Engineer to support the development of utility-scale standalone battery storage (BESS) and hybrid solar + storage projects. With a strong pipeline in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, they're looking for someone who combines technical acumen with a desire to take ownership of projects from concept through site visits and delivery.
This is a high-impact opportunity to work on next-gen storage systems across dense urban markets, support interconnection strategy, and collaborate with external consultants and internal teams. You'll report directly to the VP of Engineering and work closely with development, project management, and EPC functions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead conceptual system design (SLDs, layouts) for standalone BESS and solar+storage systems
- Manage utility interconnection processes, with a focus on Con Edison and urban utilities
- Review and manage external consultant deliverables; support future in-house design capacity
- Evaluate gen-tie and interconnection options, assess costs, and support project siting
- Interface with utilities, AHJs, consultants, and EPCs to progress projects to construction
- Represent the company in external meetings and site visits
- Participate in RFP responses and develop engineering scopes for EPC contracts
What They're Looking For:
- 4+ years of renewable energy experience, ideally with standalone BESS or hybrid systems
- Strong working knowledge of utility interconnection processes in NY/Northeast markets
- Experience reviewing electrical design packages and coordinating with consultants
- Exposure to medium-voltage substation equipment and electrical distribution systems
- A desire to grow beyond drafting and take the lead in project engineering and site execution
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (electrical preferred) or equivalent military experience
- Proficiency in modeling tools (PVSyst, PVCASE, ETAP, CYME, Helioscope) is a plus
