Job Description: Project Accountant (Construction)

Position Title: Project Accountant

Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL; On-site

Department: Finance/Accounting

Position Overview:

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Project Accountant with a strong background in the construction industry. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing the financial aspects of construction projects, ensuring accurate reporting, maintaining budgets, and providing timely financial support to project managers and stakeholders. The Project Accountant will work closely with various internal teams to ensure the smooth financial execution of projects from inception to completion.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Financial Management:
  • Oversee the accounting for multiple construction projects.
  • Prepare and monitor project budgets, ensuring adherence to financial constraints.
  • Track and report on project costs, ensuring expenses stay within budget.
  • Provide accurate financial forecasts, including project cash flow analysis.
  1. Billing & Invoicing:
  • Prepare and submit progress billings to clients and subcontractors.
  • Track accounts payable and receivable for all project-related transactions.
  • Ensure timely and accurate invoicing in line with contract terms and project schedules.
  1. Cost Control & Reporting:
  • Review and approve subcontractor invoices, purchase orders, and change orders.
  • Perform cost analysis to assess project financial health.
  • Maintain and reconcile project financial records, ensuring accuracy.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports for senior management and project stakeholders.
  1. Compliance & Documentation:
  • Ensure compliance with contract terms and conditions, as well as relevant accounting standards.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing required documentation.
  • Maintain project files, including financial documents, contracts, and change orders.
  1. Collaboration & Support:
  • Work closely with the project manager to provide regular updates on project financial status.
  • Assist in the preparation of bids and estimates by providing historical cost data.
  • Resolve any project-related financial issues or discrepancies with clients or vendors.
  1. Forecasting & Variance Analysis:
  • Monitor and track project schedules to identify potential cost overruns or delays.
  • Provide variance analysis on cost vs. budget and report findings to project management.
  • Assist in project closing, ensuring that all financial aspects are accounted for and finalized.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Project Accountant, specifically within the construction industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction contracts, cost structures, and financial reporting practices.
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting software (e.g., Procore, Viewpoint, Sage 300).
  • Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA, CMA, or similar certification is a plus but not required.
  • Skills & Competencies:
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other financial software tools.
  • Knowledge of construction project management processes and procedures.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience working with subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors in the construction industry.
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Procore, Buildertrend, or similar platforms.

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time, on-site position.
  • Occasional travel to project sites may be required.
