Job Title:Program Manager - YSPDepartment:Diversity and Inclusion Young Scholars Program Administration
The Young Scholars Program (YSP) was founded in 1988 as an initiative of the Office of the President. YSP's mission is to provide comprehensive programs to improve access to higher education for academically talented, first-generation students with high financial need in Ohio.
The Program Manager will work closely with the Young Scholars Program Executive Director and Assistant Director to act as a liaison between the pre-college and collegiate YSP teams to develop, plan, implement, and manage initiatives to prepare high school students for post-secondary education. This includes university application, admission, and transition to The Ohio State University. The Program Manager will execute undergraduate initiatives supporting university integration and matriculation to graduation.
Detailed Job Description:
Program Development - 55%
Collaborate with the YSP pre-college program coordinators and university departments to plan, manage, and implement various programs during the summer and academic year to serve pre-college (grades 8-12) and undergraduate participants in the Young Scholars Program. Coordinate pre-college campus visits, workshops, and summer residential programs; Develop, evaluate, and facilitate/conduct high-quality workshops and programs related to student success, financial aid, and the college preparation process.
Assist in preparing budgets and monitor expenses for summer programs; Develop and/or select training manuals, materials, and curricula; explore new areas of training needs and recommend new programs to meet these needs.
Student Management - 20%
Recruit, interview, select, train, and evaluate undergraduate students for the YSP Student Ambassador Program. Identifies, develops, and implements volunteer opportunities for students to host pre-college students during one-day campus visits and Ohio State visit programs. Ensures student volunteers comply with university regulations related to Youth Activities and Programs.
Recruit, interview, hire, train, and evaluate undergraduate students to serve as Peer Success Leaders for YSP summer residential programs. Develops and implements student engagement experiences for students during YSP summer residential programs at Ohio State. Ensures student employees comply with university regulations related to Youth Activities and Programs.
Success Coaching - 15%
Serve as the Success Coach for an assigned cohort of undergraduate YSP students. Meet with assigned students one on one each semester. Help students develop academic and personal goals. Monitor student progress toward goals. Provide resources and coordinate referrals at the university and within the community for student development and success. Monitor assigned students' scholarship eligibility and academic progress each term. Provide expertise in co-creating and implementing academic improvement plans. Maintain established institutional relationships for coordinated care, collaborating with YSP staff, unit colleagues, university partners and community members for pro-active intervention and student success. Maintain confidentiality and accurate records of student meetings in accordance with university policy.
Instruction and Facilitation - 5%
Serve as an instructor for the YSP first year seminar course. Teach lessons outlined in the course syllabi using established resources. Adhere to course goals and objectives to achieve established learning outcomes. Update and maintain course Carmen page and publish content for assigned sections. Grade assignments and monitor student academic progress in assigned sections.
Additional Duties - 5%
Act as a liaison to campus and community constituencies inquiring about Young Scholars Programs and correctly interpret and communicate policies, procedures, goals, mission, and services. Write, edit, review, and update the Young Scholars Program guidelines/policies, procedures, training materials, etc.
Represent YSP, as requested by the YSP Executive Director to potential supporters and other interested parties at targeted school districts. Assist with coordinating program evaluation design and analyses; write and develop grant proposals for foundations and corporations.
Additional Information:
The pay range for this job profile is $51,000-$62,000 annually. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Advanced degree in relevant field may be desirable. 4 years of relevant experience required. 4-8 years of relevant experience preferred.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Four to seven years of full-time experience in fostering student success in higher education and university environments. The program manager must be knowledgeable about and understand best practices and research related to working with pre-college students during the college preparation process and their readiness for application and admission to college. An understanding of student development theory and effective practices for student transition, integration, and support. Experience in planning and managing high-quality events and programs. Experience in supervising student staff. Knowledge of the academic and personal characteristics of first-generation students with high financial need. Availability to work certain nights and weekends. Proficiency in MS Office.
DESIRED:
Master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience successfully teaching, coaching, mentoring, or advising students. Experience planning and coordinating programs with undergraduate students. Experience overseeing, updating, and compiling student records to monitor participation and/or academic progress. The Program Manager must exhibit strong communication skills, customer service orientation, organizational abilities, critical thinking, and the capacity for complex problem-solving. Ability to work independently, engage in crucial conversations, and manage others to achieve program goals and collaborate as part of a team. Outstanding organizational skills, advanced communication, and interpersonal abilities (both verbal and written). The ability to establish and foster a supportive relationship with each YSP student from the start of high school through their college graduation. The program manager must also be familiar with large urban districts in Ohio.
