Associated Students Summary

Associated Students' (A.S.) mission is to support and represent the students of San José State University by continuing the organization's legacy of student advocacy and leadership; to enhance SJSU students' education through high-quality programs and services; and to prepare students as they move towards a thoughtful and purposeful life after graduation.

A.S. is a non-profit auxiliary corporation serving the students of San Jose State University whose primary source of funding is from mandatory student body fees. A.S. Departments include the Cesar Chavez Community Action Center, Child Development Center, General Services Center, Human Resources, Information Technology, Events, Marketing, Print & Technology Center, Student Government, and Transportation Solutions.

Position Summary

The Cesar E. Chavez Community Action Center, a department of Associated Students, connects San Jose State University students with community service opportunities that deepen the educational experience while promoting the lifelong commitment to civic activism at the heart of the Cesar Chavez legacy. Under the supervision of the CCCAC Department Manager, this position will seek to outreach to support and provide resources for student advocacy or cultural based organizations. The Events & Outreach Program Assistant will also create programs and events related to addressing campus climate and student engagement. This position will also assist in promoting broader goals and vision of the CCCAC by supporting departmental programs, services, and events.

Essential Functions
  • Assist in the coordination, development, and marketing of In Solidarity, CCCAC's program dedicated to intersectional activism and social justice.
  • Support the planning and execution of CCCAC signature events such as Rooted, Chávez, Huerta, and Itliong Day to honor legacies of activism.
  • Act as a liaison between CCCAC and multicultural, social justice-focused, and student-led organizations to strengthen campus-community partnerships.
  • Increase awareness of local social action movements and events, ensuring students have access to opportunities for advocacy and engagement.
  • Organize Lead In Solidarity, a series of workshops and programs designed to develop student leadership in activism, civic engagement, and community organizing.
  • Represent CCCAC at campus and community events, engaging with students, staff, faculty, and local organizations through meetings, outreach, and networking opportunities.
  • Provide support for CCCAC's special events, collaborations, and campus-wide programming efforts.
Outreach & Engagement Responsibilities
  • Work closely with CCCAC staff and Associated Students (A.S.) Board, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase student awareness of CCCAC programs, events, and volunteer opportunities through tabling, classroom presentations, social media, and peer-to-peer engagement.
  • Build relationships with campus departments, student organizations, and community partners to expand CCCAC's outreach efforts and increase collaboration.
  • Represent CCCAC at campus and community events, including fairs, orientations, conferences, and leadership summits.
  • Assist in social media and digital outreach, helping to create engaging content that promotes CCCAC initiatives and mobilizes student involvement.
Administrative & Team Support:
  • Provide front desk coverage, offering general support and assistance to students and visitors.
  • Assist with clerical tasks, including errands, flyering, research, and phone/email communication.
  • Participate in CCCAC staff meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Collaborate with all CCCAC staff and the Associated Students Board on shared initiatives.
  • Support CCCAC special events and programs as needed.
  • Participate in summer orientation events if applicable.

  • Ability to lift at least 40 lbs.
  • Knowledge of social justice issues and movements relevant to SJSU students
  • Demonstrate capacity to work effectively in a diverse University environment; Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with the CCCAC, A.S. and Student Involvement personnel

Work Environment, Hours, and Physical Demands
  • This job operates in an office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment.
  • Must be able to operate a computer, including a keyboard and mouse, and phone.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift or carry office or event products or supplies, up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be available to work 15-20 hours Monday through Friday between 8:00AM - 5:00PM.
  • Reliable and consistent work attendance and professionalism is required.

Required or Preferred Education and Experience
  • Must be a current matriculated San José State University student.
  • Majoring or minoring in Ethnic Studies, Political Science, Sociology, Chicana/o/x Studies, African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Women's and Gender Studies, or related fields.
  • Active involvement in student organizations, community activism, or social justice initiatives on campus or in the local community.
  • Experience organizing events, programs, or workshops, particularly those focused on civic engagement, social justice, or cultural awareness.
  • Familiarity with student leadership, advocacy work, or community outreach efforts.
  • Prior experience with multicultural, social justice-focused, or service-based organizations is strongly preferred.

Notes to Applicants
